Does the 5v input on the RPi not work correctly? Why would this alternate power feed be necessary?
supposedly you would need a power adapter to power the rpi and another to power the usb hub. this setup would eliminates the need for 2 power adapters.
has anyone considered this idea? with a better usb hub. perhaps it would not be safe to power fpga/asics this way huh? :X

Why wouldn't it be safe? That's almost exactly what I plan on doing with my MK802. When the F*cking hub finally arrives from China.

Newegg has some Rosewill ones that look to be pretty decent. They've got lots of reviews, and are on the inexpensive side.

USB hubs are 'commodity' items nowadays, which means everyone and their brother makes them, so you have no idea if your brand name hub has guts made in some guys garage in Taiwan. Best thing to do is to pick one based off the best reviews, and then buy a spare to keep on hand in case the other tanks.
