I have a question/proposal:

Recently I came across a site which offers to anonymize your coins. I believe it was called dark coin or something like that. The idea was send coins in then your coins will be merged with thousands of other coins and then you get back "dark coins".

I wonder if it was possible to build that directly into the network/blockchain.

For example one could build in a check box in the standard client "send anonymously" and it would have a small extra fee for that service.
There could be some "special nodes" which would get the fee for "darkening" the coins. Your sent coins would arrive at one of these special nodes with hundreds/thousands of other coins. Once there they would be merged, randomly split, remerged, randomly split again and so forth. And once this process would be finished sent to the original destination (the address you wanted to send coins to).

This would probably cost some extra time for a payment to clear, but couldn't that work?

Since the "special nodes" needed a certain amount of coins themselves to always be able to perform this service, we could start with a slightly higher fee at the beginning to build up the stack they need for the service. Once the node has enough funds to perform the service in a stable manner the fee would be reduced.

In order not to put to many coins to every special node for operating there could even be some sort of hierarchy: like every "special node" could deal with anonymizing 250 to 1000 BTC but for higher amounts we would have some "super special nodes" on every country/continent that could deal with 100'000-500'000 BTC. If that still isn't enough the special nodes could break the incoming amount into several sub-amounts and redirect them to cooperating nodes to do the anonymizing.

(please note that the suggested amounts are fictitious and merely used to give an idea. if this plan could / will be implemented the amounts would have to be optimized)

I like the idea, I just don't know if that could work...

I see you are updating the 0.3.24 version!  Do you happen to have a ZIP or EXE available?  I know jack shit about compiling things, but I'm a big fan of your patched 0.3.23 client!

yep: http://mtgoxlive.com/downloads/bitcoin-v0.3.24+coderrr-v2-win32.zip

I keep this post updated with the latest links: http://coderrr.wordpress.com/2011/06/30/patching-the-bitcoin-client-to-make-it-more-anonymous/

I'm pretty sure I was, but I just tried it again, and it worked this time.. the file I was getting before was around 4mb which I know was way too small.  Anyway, it's all good now, thanks!

Will your patch integrate with the wallet management tools of the next release (0.3.25) with wallet encryption?

The win32 exe I downloaded wouldn't open, and my comp said it was corrupt or something :-(  I tried re-downloading it but same thing.  Is this my computer or is anybody else having this problem?

this is nice! I think the regular client should have it. A lot of people are not aware of how easy it is to follow linked transactions.

Is there any chance you could at some point add an implementation of "sendmany" so I could send different amounts to different addresses in one single transaction?

The second version of my Bitcoin client patch gives you a better view of your current address linkages. If any two or more addresses were used together for an outgoing transaction those will be considered linked. If any change is returned from an outgoing transaction that change address will be considered linked to all the originating addresses.

This is a neat and nifty feature and I hope we get a version of in the mainline— I also hope we get a RPC version, for one not to further increase the dependance on tight GUI integration, but also so CLI jockies like me aren't left out.  Smiley
