This is nice example for all of us to not rely on the government for a future stability.

Granted the lefty government will destroy their economy, but I believe this looting is troika directed. Once they break from the EU, hopefully Varoufakis can influence the legislation of the Greek government- IMO he is truly Greece's only hope of getting out of this mess in the next 5-10 years.

Greece needs Europe much more than Europe needs Greece. If there's a clash, Greece would be 100% unable to borrow money for many, many years, and it would have to rely entirely on its exports to get foreign currencies. Living on olive oil and ouzo! That would be tough.

Well, it won't happen if Syriza keeps their current course of action: saying a bunch of cowshi* and doing nothing at all

They managed to change the name of Troika, hurrah... Roll Eyes

This doesn't look good at all.

I'd get out and into the best cryptocurrency I could find.  Individual bank accounts can't be too far behind.

A lot of rich Greeks already protect what they could easily protect. I would buy Gold, Crypto and foreign assets.

I just laugh at them. Sorry i dont want to be mean, but really, they deserved it, stupid people voted leftists into power what else did they expected?

All leftists are an organized robbery network when you legitimately steal from people to give it to others. They are too cowards to loot their banks so their start looting their own population, whom voted for them, it's just ironic.

These idiots never learn that leftists are really the lowest of the lowest scum, and they will vote them again, and again and again in power until they destroy themselves.

Well good luck Greece, you just signed your own demise by handling power to leftists, but really what did you expected from leftists?  Undecided

The political situation is far more complicated than you make out. Though Varoufakis (Greek Finance Minister) is a self proclaimed 'Libertarian Socialist/Marxist' he is probably one of the most pro-capitalist lefties around. Also, isn't it a coalition government with hard-right elements?

Granted the lefty government will destroy their economy, but I believe this looting is troika directed. Once they break from the EU, hopefully Varoufakis can influence the legislation of the Greek government- IMO he is truly Greece's only hope of getting out of this mess in the next 5-10 years.

It is the natural consequence of the welfare state. Exponential lending, until reality sets in, the state gets desperate. They don't want high taxes, they want it all. Your income and your reserves. The error was done years a go, when we fell for the scam that is the welfare state. I did too.

Sometimes I think the only way out it's outside the euro but sometimes I dont. Tax evasion will not magically disappear after Greece defaults. They will not solve the problem by defaulting, they will just keep with the bad habits. But the people that always paid taxes and worked hard will loose everything. Defaulting is a non-solution.

There's no easy way out of this situation. The problem is the government is spending too much and portions of the population aren't paying their taxes. To fix it, everyone is going to have to deal with less. It sucks for those that aren't getting their benefits...but they could take their benefits and let the entire country/society fail or they could do the patriotic thing and do with less to save the society. This last part only works if the government and society make strong and immediate plans to improve things.

This also sets a nice example for all of us to not rely on the government for a future stability. We all gotta look out for ourselves.

This looks good to me. At least, Greece starts to look seriously about how to pay back the billions they owe.

I don't have any social security, nor any of my friends, nor does most of humans. Why should the Greeks have it? Sometimes I wish everyone with social security from his government would just drop dead. The world would be a much better place, with people having a clearer view of things.

You are as delusional as it gets if you think they'll ever be able to pay the insane debt no matter what they do. Hell, not a single country will be able to pay their debts. This is all a big fucking act.

This is the writing of a lunatic. Why would you like everyone with social security to drop dead?  Do you understand that it is a system that we are forced to pay into our entire lives to protect us in times of need? The government plans to steal it from us to pay off some banks that over-leveraged themselves, yeah that sounds fair!

From Wiki:
Quote
Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.
But you would rather that they die...?

Greece will never pay back it's debt, but then neither will America, or the UK or China, so why worry?

Lunatic?

The lunatic are the people who had a belief in a social security system. Please, look quietly at the numbers. Healthcare costs have been rising every year for several decades and in most countries, the system is running a growing deficit. It's just unsustainable, and it's now about to crash. I say that's good. False beliefs have been spoiling humanity for far too long.

I'm proud to say I'm not entitled to any kind of social security. Allow me to quote Benjamin Franklin — 'Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.'

Many may have paid into that their entire careers.

I hope they make it out before it's too late and wish them the best of luck.

Exactly. People have been (usually forcefully) paying in that money to the system their entire lives and they should be guaranteed that that money is safe for their future and cannot be stolen from them at a later point.

Exactly. Plus, why shouldn't one be able to choose which health care service he wants? Being forced to pay it together with your taxes? Nah. Just lower the taxes and make it all private.

This is pretty much what Hungary did a few years ago when the govt nationalized all private pension funds and forcibly moved everyone into the state pension system. This made them possible to pay off some of the debt (to be accurate it was more like moving USD/EUR/CHF based external debts into HUF based internal debt) and finance some of their large scale projects.

People should once and for all realise, that governments don't guarantee anything. What is more, it's quite dangerous to blindly rely on public financial institiutions, insurances etc. as if government is in need, it will do anything it wants with your money.

Of course if they were forced to pay money, they have right to demand what have been promised them.

Well link does not work for me ran out of free FT articles so posting an alternate
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-03-03/greek-pensioners-fund-ukraines-government-syriza-will-tap-pension-funds-pay-imf

Looking at this

As the radical left-wing government takes from the implictly wealthier Greeks (pension funders), it is giving free electricity, a rent allowance, and food stamps to the poor.

So I guess it is a form of wealth transfer.
