Yeah, the couple took off with 900 Million PHP and its all over the news here in the Philippines. And the sad part is that my nephews and nieces keep asking me if I'm a scammer. LOL. Damn, that's a lot of money and I'm glad that the couple was caught by the authorities. But I'm sure that those criminals have lived a lavish lifestyle and that the money is all gone now. It was reported that they were able to lured a lot of investors and a promise of good ROI in 15 days and most of them have invested during the November and December ran of bitcoin, so obviously there's a lot of money to be made during that time, unfortunately, the market crashes that's why the couple wasn't able to pay the investors.

ha,bad reputation with nephews and nieces now, made me chuckle a little bit
that is 17 mil $ + we are talking about here,it is more than enough for the victims to try and execute this couple
and I'm sure they lost at least 2/3 of it since the price has crashed, probably they did plan to return (or not) but the market said no
as for the lavish lifestyle... 17 mil,man you cannot possibly waste so much money in a short time
but I highly doubt there will be any compensation for the victims, maybe there is a chance to trace the remaining coins
but the majority of the money is gone for sure

"Too good to be true"
That is what happening when people are hurry for easy money. Not everyone understand bitcoin yet. All those victims could skip all kind of scam if they would simply learn about bitcoin and ways to earn on it. In this case they would understand fast that they can have profit from bitcoin without any other people or participation a in some organizations, for that they needed just to put money on an exchanger and to buy bitcoin without any big fees and risks. But all of those victims were too lazy to find out about bitcoin and crypto, no, it's too hard, they chosed to believe to some couple and gave money to them. In the end we have what we have.

probably preying on people who are not very tech or cryptocurrency savvy at all
also looks like they were tempted by some retardedly high profits, which is a huge red flag in any investment
especially dealing with the things you have some very vague idea about
what is really sad, that some of them might have given away their life savings
I have a very mixed feelings towards it,on one hand ,victims, you cannot be that gullible and greedy,on the other hand
people got to be protected from the scammers like that
You are right they are probably blinded by potential profits on their unknowing victims. Mostly this people who are scammed are people who trusted the criminal first rather than doing their own research. This is the kinds of crimes where they taint the image of Bitcoin with bad reputation. And to think about it this scams won't even last if people are not greedy and also careful with their investments. But we cannot blame only just one person here as a lot of factors lead to this from both the scammer and the victim.

I remember the fun story happened in Russia, when people were buying bitcoins in a physical form of coin because they were told that it's a growing long-term asset =D

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
They were not scammed into investing in Bitcoin, they were scammed into investing in a Ponzi scheme which used Bitcoin.  That's a terribly misleading headline and the assertion that it makes is repeated a couple more times in the article as well.

These sorts of Bitcoin-related Ponzi schemes are incredibly common, with hundreds popping up on the Internet every day and some of them attempting to have an offline presence as well.
Regardless of how much a governmental body tries to protect people from falling for scams, it will never work when greed is involved.
It works sometimes.  Instead of blaming the victims like you, they blame scammers since it's their fault that the scheme exists.

yeah even Einstein once said that fear and greed were the two main forces that drive the world forward Smiley
the third was stupidity, not much has changed since
if you read some marketing strategies handbooks, they say that if your offer doesn't appeal to the great three:
laziness greed or stupidity-you are doing something wrong
well, lets hope that it was a good lesson for those who lost their money and hope they recover some of the losses
p.s. at least they know what the cryptocurrencies are now  Roll Eyes

More than basic protection isn't possible. I am honestly tired of all that negativity towards crypto because of how retarded beings find it necessary to invest in obvious schemes. Important to point out is that people in most cases are already aware of the scummy nature of these schemes, but decide to invest anyway because they think they scoop up profits before the scheme goes dark. I don't feel sorry for these people at all. Regardless of how much a governmental body tries to protect people from falling for scams, it will never work when greed is involved. It's impossible to protect people who don't want to be protected at all, because they think they can outsmart everything related to this market.

Greed is hard to avoid at all. This goes with other things as well, not only with bitcoin or crypto. Even with all the protection and safeguards put up by the government, it's always going to be hard to avoid these scams when there are still many greedy people who would do almost anything or go through extreme extents just to attain money.

Most people get tempted, especially when they hear about a thing they don't understand being a profitable investment, and you could read about it in the news.

It's not sad. The switch remains the same, only the bait changes. 20 years ago it was gold, then stocks, internet startups, now cryptocurrencies...

You shouldn't look for protection from liars. Those are things you have to detect on your own. How come if someone comes to you in the street saying that they lost their phone and want to borrow yours for a while, you expect it to be a scam, but when they get all sophisticated and technical you fall for it?

In order to survive people do anything, even if they are dishonest things, even if they have to kill other people, this world is cruel, it seems that money corrupted people or it was people who let themselves be corrupted for money, this couple is being accused of running pyramid scheme, but what did they do with the money? this seems to be the mystery in this case

I also read this news earlier on. Surprisingly this fact happened in the Philippines. Now, I should say the Philippines carries one of the largest number of people who are into Bitcoin. The last time I know, the Philippine government nor the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas did not prohibit the usage of Bitcoin neither did it back it up. They merely reminded the people that the cryptocurrency market has gone bizarre due to its heavily fluctuating market hence many are lured into it on the assumption that they have high chances of growing their monies through it. Hence, they are saying that people are investing in their own risk. Nonetheless, with this unfortunate event, there are strong possibilities that the Duterte administration will impose stringent measures to fight these criminality. I am sure the Philippine President will not let this go easy. Waiting for things to surface....

This is a very difficult problem to solve and takes time to minimize
