So the mining part seems pretty bad move so far

It was terrible timing getting my operation going.

I got in when difficulty was 7m.
Now it's 38m soon to be 50m.

Had I started 2 months before (3m) my returns would have been very different -
Had I started 2 months after (15m), the math would have suggested buying coins rather than mining.

Great write up and excellent information. It is good to see that you diversified your investment into ‘crypto-currency’ using mining, purchasing and investments. I have been in the crypto-currency sidelines for a little while now with minimal miners only. Will take some info from this thread and re-invest my hardware/options.

What stocks did you invest in, and were there any you'd rather have invested in?

ASICMINER
TAT.ASICMINER
ACTIVEMINER
BTCGARDEN

The bulk of returns were on ASICMINER (& TAT)
Started investing at 2.25 and cost averaged up to 4.

I did OK on activemining - rode some hype.

As with every investment, I wish I would have invested more in the ones that did well and less in the ones that didn't.
But seriously, ASICMINER has been a champion in appreciation and dividends.

In my opinion, new investors won't benefit much from the appreciation as much as the healthy dividends if you were to invest right now.

Well at least your investments have been going well. I'm sure you'll get a full ROI from your video cards soon though? It can surely not be as bad as you seem to be making it out xD.

It's really not meant to be made out to be bad or good.

Clearly, my 2 best moves were buying BTC outright and investing.
However, I learned a lot about how things worked because of the mining process.

I have no real complaints.
I learned a lot about the process.
And I got to watch the swirling dramas of bitcointalk.

I believe you should use your video cards to mine alt-coins. Mining BTC with GPU these days didn't profit at all.

Info nuggets for the newbs

Mining:
100 Days ago - Started BTC as a miner
$2970 - Invested in video cards, power supplies, etc
$780 - Electricity consumption
---------
9.01 Mined Bitcoins
$416.29/ BTC

Purchases:
10 BTC - Purchased
$840 - Invested
-------
$84/ BTC

Investing:
19 BTC - total invested in different mining stocks
---------
28.5 BTC Current portfolio value

Totals:
Total Invested: $4590
Total BTC: 28.5
----
Mkt price $2981.67
Value of video cards $800 (ebay value)
-----
$3781.67 Total
$132.69/ BTC

In April 2013, if I would have spent $4590 on BTC
I would have owned 35 BTC
Instead, I spent the same amount of money.
Dicked around with video cards.
And ended up with 28.5 BTC.
