It is a great exploration to know if there are really other creatures to other planets.
No that exploring if there are other creatures but also if we can migrate to that planet because soon the world will be burned by global warming.

Stephen hawkings, a russian billionaire, and Mark Zukkenburg have teamed up to launch an extraterrestrial project. Thoughts and info?

i dont suppose  that this news is true but if it is true, this research  will be the worst scientific project of all times because  i think we dont need to spend too much money on finding alliens instead of this, we have to stop hunger on earth for sure..

great quote.. i totally share same ideas with you .. we have to stop hunger , find cures for cancer , aids etc.. not spending too much money on finding so called alliens in the universe..

So they are going to invent the real life Star Trek? Which one is Captain Kirk and which one is Spock?
They need a doctor so I guess Hawkings will be their Bones.  Cheesy

I was hoping some of the mega-wealthy Bitcoin elite could invent the real life Star Trek:

Searching for alien life (ET's) is the only way we will ever find Satoshi.  Cheesy
Good thoughts, maybe some relative of satoshi may they find there, but alien doesnt mean alike us, some maybe bacteria and other living organism.

Stephen Hawking is on board with a $100 million project to find intelligent life in outer space via a tiny armada of laser-propelled spacecrafts.

The Breakthrough Starshot Project was unveiled Tuesday on the 102nd floor of One World Observatory, where Hawking was joined by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner in announcing the ambitious plan.

“The limit that confronts us now is the great void between us and the stars but now we can transcend it,” said Hawking.

Source

Hawking has to get his money somewhere. Keep the science fiction alive in the hearts and minds of people so that they keep on pouring money into Hawking's pocket.

Cool

Hawking's net worth is what? $20 million already? Between talks, prizes, book sales, tv shows, etc. Doubt there is much reason to be cynic here.

I think it is a good initiative because then we will confirm the alien existence.

With so many films that talk about Alien traveling until our planet to exterminate us and we would not have technology to beat them is pretty much welcome this initiative to know once and for all whether we are alone or not!

Ridiculous amount sof money have been wasted on things far less important than this, As unlikly as i see it that trhey will find anything even with that kind of money it will be interesting at least.

I'm not sure it's for finding aliens. it doesn't make any sense and is wasting time for sure. The money is better to use for daily life or to donate to the poor.

and I'm not sure that aliens drown in the movies are real.

I had never heard of info about this. but if that is true then $ 100 Million is a very large amount of money .but with it then you would think that the money was comparable with the knowledge that will come later. we can not deny that there is life on other planets. This latter life is always hidden in the national interest to several large countries.

is that true?give me more explain about that and source maybe.
find aliens life is not easy just becasue they not exist in this earth, and going to out of this earth is not easy job,we need better spaceship than star wars ship Grin

Some "minor" problem....

The laser is the most intimidating and expensive of the challenges. It would have to generate 100 gigawatts of power for the two minutes needed to accelerate the butterfly probes to a fifth of the speed of light (subjecting its tiny innards to 60,000 times the force of normal gravity, by the way). That is about as much energy as it takes for a space shuttle to lift off, Dr. Loeb said, and about 100 times the output of a typical nuclear power plant.

It's the starshot project. Easy to find online. It was all over news sites. For example: http://phys.org/news/2016-04-stephen-hawking-life-tiny-spacecraft.html

find aliens life is not easy just becasue they not exist in this earth, and going to out of this earth is not easy job,we need better spaceship than star wars ship Grin

Have to start somewhere. Getting the ships moving at a fifth of the speed of light and then transmitting back what they find from another star system is a good start.

Hope people who complain about this complain when the next transformers movie comes out costing 4 or 5 times more than this project. Or when the next twilight saga comes out or some other stupid movie.

Stephen hawkings, a russian billionaire, and Mark Zukkenburg have teamed up to launch an extraterrestrial project. Thoughts and info?

It's really funny that some people have so much wealth and money and don't know how to spend this funds better than on something useless for all humankind.
They may wait 100 or 1000 years to receive answer from aliens on some very fare planet but most people need help and support right now.
I don't know it's this funny or stupid news, or both.
But, I guess, it's better even to spend money in this way than for wars or weapons.

Yep, only if all the other people would spend their money on similar projects too. Unfortunately there are people who spend on weapons more than on food, North Korea for example, and if you don't want to be conquered by them you should invest in weapons too.

Yes, it's sad reality that we have to spend so much money on weapons when so many people in Africa don't have enough food to eat and starving.
But, if we can't avoid it because of countries like N. Korea and Isis terrorist organization, at least we don't need to spend money on such stupid and very expensive things like searching alien life.

Agree that we spend too much on weapons. But it isn't because of north korea or isis. That is just the current excuse. Before that it was the russians. Before them the germans. Before that the british. Before them the spanish. Etc. We spend that money in weapons because it makes some people very rich.

I really do not like the idea of Facebook being involved in our potentially first contact.

why spend all those money when it is guaranteed that alien life will be discovered someday.

IF they are doing some actions to help the poor before doing this then its ok.

It's good as long as it wont be wasted, but i would be devastated if they wont prioritize their fellow human beings.

Cause there are many more things to discover in our own planet that space missions.

Judging by your username you a Christian,  so why dont the Vatican lead by example and liquidate some of their $15 billion dollar wealth and spend it on the poor instead of telling everyone else to do it.

There is money to do both. Help people right now and explore space. Doesn't have to be one or the other. And it's a smaller amount than some big budget movies. That's a bigger waste. This could have a good return in information about the world around us, develop our knowledge in many areas and create infrastructure we may need in the future.

There has always been and will always be hunger etc.

The X prize drew a lot of private investment in to the space industry so why not the search for ET.

Personally I dont trust that NASA would reveal the truth of any findings.

A private mission probe to Mars or Europa with $100 million prize is far more likely to get to the truth.

When I say alien life - I mean bacteria and up, not little green men running around anal probing earthlings Smiley

Alien probing is the only thing a few of us look forward to when the aliens come to say hello.
If they are not cross breeding or eating us,what else does that leave for them to come swing by!

I heard they are still on their way to get Mark Karpeles as they had a shit load of bitcoin in MtGox.  The incomprehensible vastness of space is just slowing them down slightly.

Mark is an alien, one of their own. That's the real reason they are having such a hard time getting him. He knows how they think.

Why not look into our earths crust for those mole people?

Its exciting to know that their is a push for this because it means they will be searching in space and could come across some interesting dynamics to push us towards intergalactic travel. Chance of finding aliens I think may be slim due to space retracting on its self, which gives the impression that this will excel as it does so. Meaning time would be more limited and the advanced aliens are most likely dealing with that than responding to some odd S.O.S call from a backwards alien population.
