I wonder if this might be a slight stop gap for potential Vega 56 efficiency ahead of the volta release. Isn't really compelling for them to release Volta anytime soon, given the current state of competition

I'd find this somewhat interesting.

However, I personally think that they'd be better off designing something to go between the 1060 and 1070. It seems that there's a much bigger gap between those two options than the 1070 and 1080.

Zotac AMP! EXTREME GTX 1070 back in stock at Newegg. That's about as close to 1070 ti you can get without the GDDR5X nonsense Cheesy

ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1070 AMP! Extreme, ZT-P10700B-10P, 8GB GDDR5 - $ 459.99

They MIGHT be thinking about it as a "1080 Light" model or some such though, to be able to use up some existing GPU chips that have minor flaws - THEN it might make some sense.
 Similar to the R9 290(390) vs R9 290x(390x) or R9 280(HD7950) vs R9 280x(HD7970).

Otherwise, total waste of time and effort for them.

Good news, hopefully the price would be reasonable planning to get some 1070 on October but if 1070 ti would consume less power and much better than vega I might reconsider.

After seeing your post, I investigated a bit online and found a good amount of information on this.

Anyone hear the rumor? Few more cores, Gddr5x, fitting in between 1070 and 1080. Thoughts?
