Equality of opportunity is an aim of ordinary people.
But the aim of those at the top is almost always to retain their own inbuilt advantage, at the expense of everyone else.

Society is controlled by those at the top, which is largely why it is unfair.

 yes,some of the politicians in certain countries still apply some old fshioned methods to discipline the population in certain ways.But not all of the old regymes and types of brainwashing structural methods are bad. For example lets take democracy. I think even these days its a good method to proclaim and its good directon in which politicions should behave and think.What about that?

We voted out of the EU and won     and people are wanting a second vote   who are these people ?

I do not think that we still have 19th century system of politics in the 21st century. It is primarily because there are a lot of changes occured from the past centuries. And these changes cause the people to also change how they view politics and how they vote. Hence, the style of politics should also be changed. It should be flexible and adaptive to whatever change it is. I think that the people nowadays are getting smarter and more knowledgeable about whom to vote and what the power of their votes are. With this, politicians must also change the way they persuade people. And this also pushed them to become more careful in what they do, however, their bad deeds don't change as they are only hidding it better.

I think popcorn1 was actually saying that politicians are stuck in the past themselves, that it was bad in the 19th century and that's still what we have now. I agree though, that there's not much use in comparing what we have now to what we used to have. Even if something is a little bit better than it used to be, that doesn't mean that we should stop trying to improve.

Luckily, I think there are some good example of politicians these days that are breaking free of old traditions. During the World Cup, I heard a bit about the Croatian president. She seems to be a very simple person making good decisions in government. She flies economy class and sits with all the other Croatian football fans. I believe I read that she cut politicians salaries and sold many luxury vehicles that the government owned.

we , the citizens pick those so called "scumbags". we have elections! we have a choice to change , its a democracy, but for some reason people go back to those politicians. its upto us to initiate change

Yep, that`s awesome. This is like the moments before the French revolution. Sometimes, politicians seem to forget that they are actually "hired" by the people and that they actually need to be in the service of their "patrons".
But the problem resides on why they don`t just get hired? If they are absolute incompetents in the work they were hired for, why, if they fail, don`t get hired by their patrons, meaning the people?

Why do most people think that once upon a time everything was better? Previously, people were kinder and more decent, politicians are more cunning and nobler. It seems to me that people very little and slowly change and most often change in a negative direction.
We say that we have bad politicians. We very easily condemn not only politicians, but also our colleagues and acquaintances. We blame that we do not live the way we want everyone around us, but not ourselves.
Let's leave politicians in the 19th and 21st century in peace and start thinking about ourselves more.

After all you do get paid over 100k a year to do a job and still want more..
