It's just Paypal trying to promote their mobile wallet and thinking that mentioning a few sentences about Bitcoin get them more press.

Bitcoin doesn't need backhanded "endorsements" from decrepit companies that should have been bankrupt years ago if not for making the very lucky decision of latching onto Ebay's balls.

Thanks for pointing that out, so I could just skim to the end. It was getting painful to look at that article with a leering photo of a used-car-with-banana-skins-in-the-gearbox salesman.

Strangely I think I could warm to 'synthetic currency' as a moniker. It sounds futuristic and cool.

Another indication that Paypal is watching bitcoin closely.
WebMoney is already demonstrating that bitcoin can sucessfully be integrated into an existing multi-currency payment system as "just another currency". It wouldn't be too surprising to see Paypal adopt a similar strategy. Combined with Paypal's massive ongoing rollout into retail payments, this would be quite significant. Bitcoin could be used anywhere Paypal was accepted, with no additional merchant buy-in required (... and most importantly for Paypal - it would hitch its existing merchant fee structure to a significant portion of the bitcoin economy).
