One of their other posts says that they're using BitPay to convert straight to USD. They're still too afraid to actually have BTC holdings.

I hope that EFF will not convert these bitcoins to dollars, and instead spend them into the bitcoin economy. They should pay for their webhosting or other IT costs directly with these bitcoins. If their webhosting company wont accept payment in bitcoin then they should switch to one who will.

It would be nice if donations to any organisation could be accompanied by a note that they be spent directly and not converted. The more bitcoins that can circulate in the economy without converstion costs, the better it is for the bitcoin ecosystem.

Strength in numbers
3,505 BTC = U$448,640

Lawyers, ugh. Have they actually spelled out legally why they can accept bitcoins now and they couldn't in 2011? As far as I know, the laws haven't changed? Not sure we really need these people defending us if they are that lost.

They are fearful. First of being left behind, then of annoying their DC friends then of being left behind again. Soon they'll probably change their feelings again. They seem to be on the frontier of indecision.

This week, the Electronic Frontier Foundation received a generous donation of 726 bitcoins – worth $95,070.73 in United States dollars.

This is in addition to over $7,000 USD we've received through Bitcoin donations in the last couple weeks.

We wanted to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Bitcoin community for its steadfast support of our work and explain the unique story behind this particular donation. Above all, we want to commit to using this donation to promote liberty in the digital world. We’ll be using this money to support our impact litigation, advocacy, and technical projects that defend individual privacy, combat government surveillance, support free expression, and promote innovation.
