Bitcoin Not Bombs uses virtual currency to aid homeless

SAN FRANCISCO -- Bitcoin Not Bombs, an activist organization to help non-government groups and social entrepreneurs start using the virtual currency Bitcoin, has purchased 325 hoodie sweatshirts to distribute to homeless people in San Francisco.

Bitcoin Not Bombs will hand out the hoodies on Sunday as part of a larger project to help the homeless during the winter months. The organization used crowdfunding -- peer-to-peer online fundraising -- to buy the sweatshirts from clothing retailer Mass Appeal.

The fundraising was done in Bitcoin, and the hoodies were purchased with Bitcoin, a cybercurrency that is created, distributed and authenticated outside of banks or governments. Bitcoin Not Bombs has spearheaded several Bitcoin fundraisers for charity, including a campaign to purchase 500 toothbrushes and 300 brown bag lunches for the poor.
