Unfortunately while ignorance continues to be glorified in all it's forms throughout the world, random fear mongering like this will succeed without effort. Especially powerful when channeled as a scapegoat through the laments of parent... precious material for banksters!

That was my initial reaction: ignorance can be annoying. But you have to understand, her son has just died and she's devastated. Also from reading what she wrote, she clearly has no understanding of Bitcoin and in her mind she thinks the Bitcoin trader/exchange is somehow in control and therefore responsible for how her son chose to use his coins. (which in my opinion would be wrong anyway, because by 21 I think you should be capable of deciding how you want to spend your own money)

I know, and all my sympathy to her, but one really should do some research before making a public outpurst.

Ignorance is still ignorance regardless of the circumstances. I can understand her grief, but this isn't going to bring her son back. Any intelligent person would not shift the blame on this, so this is why it riles up other people.

Cocaine is one hell of a drug.

These people need educating.

And perhaps a counter petition would be a good idea?

Exactly. Would she be making this petition if he used Bitcoins (or fiat) to buy "adulterated" alcohol that killed him?

Si vis pacem, para bellum
its about time hammers were banned ,axes too and screwdrivers as well when were banning random things
that could be used for harmful purposes

and kitchen knives ,theyre a much greater chance of being killed with a kitchen knife
than a bitcoin so the should ban kicthen knives first and formost before anyone considers
banning btc for being "dangerous"

Fuck that stupid old hag.

If she didn't want her son to die from a drugs overdose then she should have brought him up better.

Her son's death is her fault and I am going to start a petition to ban neglectful parenting;

Bitcoin per se is not the problem. The problem is the encryption of bitcoin transactions. The so called bitcoin currency trader who accept my sons payments provided email customer services to my son and I am sure to the seller as well. Jeremy West and Cryptospend Pty Ltd should not be able to hide behind "I am just a bitcoin currency trading service" because at the end of the day my son paid cash into his Cryptospend accounts at NAB bank and only Cryptospend can authorise payment to the drug seller. The rest is an electronic smokescreen by claiming "oh your son bought bitcoins from me." No my son didnt. He paid for drugs and Cryptospend paid the dealer. Cryptospend only accepts cash - that says it all. This company can and should be forced to reveal who they paid with my son's money from their accounts by the Federal Police. Their books should also be opened to the ATO. We have laws contrary to what Mr Hockey says. We need to enforce them. We dont need to wait for international laws.

How does that even make sense. Every single sentence of that paragraph is wrong.

Still, a very sad story to hear. And the reaction is understandable because it is an emotional one rather than a rational one. But as I say, these people who have signed the petition have probably never really heard of Bitcoin until this tragic event. They don't really have any understanding of it, and are lashing out because that's just human nature. They need educating, so that they will understand that you can't blame a currency for the results of something bought with it - otherwise they should sign a petition to ban all money.

I can understand that them learning of bitcoins in this matter must be frightening but that partition is based on completely flawed logic.

I think like with video game violence and trying to ban the internet people are just going to eventually stop taking these people seriously and completely lose patience with them, I'm certainly getting to that point now because I'm getting sick of their fear mongering, I don't even take all the murder stories the media post up seriously anymore, yes, it's definitely a bad thing, but the fact that they're blatantly trying to scare you with it just pisses me off rather than makes me concerned now.

OMG .....

He died from drugs, not from bitcoin. Some have argued Silk Road made buying drugs safer because of the reputation system. Safe than buying off some unknown dude at a nightclub.

We should ban cash as well. Cash is used to buy alcohol which causes road traffic fatalities. Not to mention used to be nearly all drugs of course.
Yup, the same analogy can be made about dollars, being used every single day to buy drugs and alcohol.
