Gold investors have the backing of thousands of years of global history of using the metal as a currency

Dinosaurs were backed by millions years of history. Where are they now ?

Hackers or hard drive crash. No matter the cause behind the Mt. Gox system failure, the end result is the same. The bitcoins are gone. If you own gold, you can go check on it now, but I imagine it is just where you left it.

Hahaha. Remember Executive Order 6102 of 1933 ?

Just vanished into thin air.

They didn't vanish into thin air, someone likely has them.  We just don't know who.

Lose the key to the wallet/address and they have for all purposes "vanished".
True, but I think it's very unlikely that Gox lost the keys.
