Actually french wines are more like wine mixed with rum because their grapes don't ripen very well. There's some legal limit above zero that they have on adding sugar to wine (in a lot of countries that limit is zero because it really reduces the quality of your wine) and still they regularly go over that. Even in sunny and well-marketed wine-making southern France regions like Bordeaux:
