seriously, it's gonna make A LOT more than just a typical you posing in front of a camera.
Why aren't these people getting creative? Like the guy sitting naked on top of a gumball machine. That really was something, a lot going on. Although feel a little bad for the dog... :'D

but a very cool idea!

Yeah. I still ain't doin' no stupid selfies.

I am also not a fan of selfies for myself, however some societies where 70% + + + of the population have little or no disposable income and cannot afford other types of entertainment ( Philippine average wage = $10 a day) this is cheap and affordable pastime for them.

I have read that this is the selfie/social network capital of the world. (probably per capita)

Regarding the ability to promote bitcoin though this method the prize money and potential to get "tips) is a big incentive for minimum wage or unemployed persons to earn and learn through bitcoin. It would probably be more effective if the prizes are slightly higher and tiered  eg top 3 daily winners  get prizes ( = 90 people per month will get to know how to turn bitcoin to fiat) and maybe  quarterley/ yearly big prize winners. This in turn will boost the potential use of bitcoin for remittances of which probably 60% + + of the population benefit from and is a huge $24B market. The creators of this site are also a bitcoin exchange and probably are aiming to get a slice of the remittance market via bitcoin.

As of this writing, the 700 users on the site have uploaded more than 5,000 selfies. These photos have earned 17.7 million satoshis (there are 100,000,000 satoshis in one bitcoin) in daily prizes and almost double that in tips at 32.3 million satoshis. These numbers suggest that while Bitcoin adoption cannot be completely sustained through tipping alone, users are beginning to embrace the cryptocurrency for what it ultimately is: a way to give and receive value – in other words, money.

Whatever our personal opinions are on selfies I suggest that in this market the idea is head and shoulders above anything else being used to promote bitcoin to the masses . Good luck to them!

Users upload selfies to the Bitstars site, which can then be “liked” by other members of the community. The selfie with the most “likes” at the end of the day receives a Bitcoin prize equivalent to PhP500 or more. Hence, the Bitstars tagline is “may the best selfie win!”
