As you said probably that BTM had less security than normal ATMs have, therefore it was easy target for the robbers.
And maybe criminals thought if they steal this their offense will be less punishable? Maybe they did not know what that is?

Rather a juicy target in theory. Publicly announced boxes filled with cash run by well meaning hipsters are going to be rather less challenging than anything operated by a bank.

It is simple .... It's small and filled with money... like a portable piggy bank.  Grin Grin The robbers are amateurs and did not know that it was recently emptied, so they could have

made a bigger haul if they did some homework. I would have fitted a battery operated pinhole camera onto the device, that gets triggered when the device is moved. It would take

photo's of the guys doing this and send it via a mobile phone to another location. I guess that would make it too expensive for the owners.  Sad

This story reminds me of that breaking bad episode where they can't open the atm and one of the robbers ends up dying in the end. Cheesy
So stupidity is my vote.Grin

Why steal it? For the money of course.

Some ATM's carry quite a substantial amount of cash so there is definitely an incentive to steal one. The problem however is that they are rigged with 'countermeasures' like dye that stains the money etc.. when tampered with and or when opened incorrectly. But I guess its possible to bypass those if you are familiar with the way they operate.

Wonder if they were aware of the fact that this was a BTM and not a normal ATM, if so they most probably though there's thousands of bitcoin available inside them.

Stupidity or Greed? Why Steal Bitcoin ATM?

On November 3, two robbers stole a Lamassu Bitcoin ATM at the Village Smoke Shop in Atlanta, Georgia, according to local news website Clatl.com.

According to Atlanta’s Police Detective Scott Bowers, the thieves got away with Bitcoin ATM (also called BTM) filled with about US$2,000 as it was recently emptied. What’s more is that one of the perpetrators fired a gun shot, though luckily no one was injured.
