I never known anyone who got a virus like this. All transactions are on the public ledger. You can track the transactions across the chain.Using bitcoins makes them more traceable than traditional crimes. With western union its a mystery as soon as it leaves your account, with blockchain you can trace them.

I am not surprised at all. It's basically free money for these who are trying to extort people and are asking for ransom to be paid solely in Bitcoin. There are always people who fall for this. I can remember a good friend who downloaded a music album, and then got a virus in his pc. They locked his pc untill he would pay €150 via Western Union. Glad he gave me a call and I directly told him not to do it. Simply secure erase your HDD and you'll be fine. With Bitcoin it's even easier for them.
