U will never know the true answer, before you try
There are good reasons why the bitcoin community reacted with scepticism when reporters claimed to have unmasked “the real Satoshi Nakamoto” this week, and not just because there have already been so many cases of mistaken identity in the hunt for the cryptocurrency’s pseudonymous creator.
The question “who is Satoshi?” has been one of the internet’s enduring mysteries, but what may be under-appreciated is how much that mystery helped drive bitcoin’s early growth. If its inventor does turn out to be a self-aggrandising Australian businessman with a history of run-ins with the tax authorities, the ardour of many bitcoin enthusiasts is likely to fade and there will be painful questions to address about its future.
