Bitcoin chief scientist Gavin Andresen has changed a 1 to a 2in the virtual currency’s source code, doubling the maximum size in the blockchain that acts as the system’s inventory to two megabytes. This will allow bitcoin to overcome the limits on transactions it is hitting with just 1Mb sizes.But, as Richard Waters points out, not everyone agrees with the development of what’s being called Bitcoin Classic and, if it is not adopted for 75 per cent of transactions, this amounts to a fork in the code and a damaging split in the bitcoin world. Mr Andresen tried an upgrade last year with Bitcoin XT that failed to win enough support, so can he succeed this time?
