Would this be the first time a government shut down something like this?  I know things have failed but not sure if I have heard something like this.

Rumors have been flying that the shapeshift hack might've been an operation to disclose information leading to laundering charges. This only thickens the plot, I think...
What is there to disclose if no account information is being captured by them? Outside of bitcoin addresses and other alts... which can all already be seen and scrutinized on the blockchain.
