< Conspiracy Theory Time >

The MPAA/RIAA needs more sources of revenue. Their anti-piracy actions aren't going so well, since everyone started migrating to other methods like VPN to discourage local ISP filtering and discovery. What better scapegoat than Bitcoin? Then they can seize what they want, auction off the proceeds and get a nice lump sum of money. Rinse and repeat. I wouldn't be surprised if this was an action taken by the purported defendants in this case.

These are the same people that said "home video recording is killing the TV industry", and other lies.

Just wondering....

And I wonder if such an industry as Disney can affect the development of Bitcoin and even its popularity among people in different layers of society

Sure they can every Disney movie has a conspiracy theory attached to it ^^.
Either way this weekend will be interesting since the Pirates are likely to do something now before the box office launch next week.

Hackers Holding Disney’s Latest ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ For Ransom

I hope this is not going to become a regular thing in the future, because Bitcoin will be blamed for everything.

Disney should just early release, pirating a copy aside they should always be prepared on their cybersecurity front as a large corporation.
That said I admit it is difficult to protect the small vendors down the distribution chain from getting hacked, in theory they would standardize the security but in practice not possible.
But I can't help but say ARR Someone Pirates the Pirates and the Pirates be Pirated today.

I agree. They should just make an early release of the movie and just considered it a lost if the hackers have already released on our several torrents sites and can be downloaded. I'm sure they have fired there IT support because the hacker was able to infect them with malware. And its not bitcoin fault, its just people take advantage of this technology.

Looks like the hackers aren't very updated yet. Still asking to use Bitcoin when they know it can be traced back to them. Why not ask for Monero or something more anonymous?

If an address is used only once to send coins somewhere it's fairly non traceable besides that it is basically asking the ransomed first to find a Bitcoin exchange then to register to an altcoin exchange in order to pay the ransom.
In other words it would be extremely esoteric for them and the ransomed and a mixer can still do the job for now.

That said you got a point about Monero ^^.

"Because the address hasn't been used yet on the bitcoin blockchain," said Battaglia, "there’s not going to be any information I can get on the blockchain yet. But I can take the ransom note and plug it into IC3."

Even if a ransom isn’t paid, Battaglia indicated that his team will compare the ransom demand with those on file at IC3 to look for connections. In similar cases with similar demands, some victims may have decided to pay the ransom, resulting in possibly helpful data for the cases in which the ransom was not paid.

Addresses from victims who did pay are then processed by the FBI’s "blockchain tool" to generate a list of wallets associated with the same "entity" that issued the ransom demand. From the initial pool of addresses that paid, the FBI then searches for connections between the recipient wallet and its expenditures.

While initial data may be limited, as more of the funds are spent the tool accumulates more data, including from 'change addresses' that return satoshis or other denominations to the original recipient wallet.

"I might find that those transactions occur within another cluster of bitcoin addresses that I don’t know anything about," said Battaglia, "and my analysis tool doesn’t know anything about. But I can take those addresses, pull them out, plug them into our case management system."

What? I guess i believe i will download the latest Pirates of the Carribean in no time. How unlucky for them. Ransomware is ruins a lot of companies. Its all on news. The ransomware can either copy or destroy the file. And i doubt they will destroy that. Disney will be pissed when they see it on torrent sites.
