Blockchain may be best known as the technology behind the bitcoin digital currency, but it’s spreading quickly into other areas of finance.
Its “distributed ledger technology,” which makes cryptocurrencies possible, is being pored over by banks, exchanges and governments worldwide. At the moment it’s unclear whether blockchain offers revolutionary change in the way transactions take place, or “just” substantial cost savings.
