Most people still do not take care of security on the Internet and click on anything they find it interesting.Those who make ransomware actually have a pretty easy earnings.Lately I see that large ransoms is paid by companys and state enterprises,they are highly desirable targets.
New type of ransomware appeared recently,and it affects smart TVs.So if you watch your smart TV which is connected to internet there is a possibility that you may be infected by this new ransomware.

Specific aspects of this ransomware make it appear very similar to Locky. Both types use the same type of RSA encryption keys, they leave similar file types behind, and the ransom text is nearly identical. Despite these similarities, the new kind of ransomware is far from ineffective, though.

This is precisely why people shouldn't entertain spam email. The problem is that people still fall for this sh*t.

It's simple and straightforward enough (at least for me) to spot fake emails. I think people should be schooled with regards to this. If that fails, learning a lesson the hard way isn't a bad idea.
