Wise move. Russians invested so much in this technology. Banning bitcoin or "criminalising" it harm themselves more than what they think. People should get this, Dollar is not to be blamed for purschasing illegal stuff, just like bitcoin. Bitcoin made it easiser to buy stuff anonymously but it made it possible almost for everything. Look at Internet. You can learn how to make bombs on internet yet you don't do it. Why? Because it is a dumb move!

The question of banning cryptocurrency has been a matter of discussion in Russia over the past two years. In August 2014, the Ministry of Finance developed a document that called for the introduction of fines up to $15,000 for the production and usage of bitcoin. Later, the amount of the fine was reduced. However, in September 2015, the Ministry started to actively advocate the introduction of a criminal penalty for circulation of virtual currency including bitcoins. They suggested punishing individuals by imprisonment for up to four years, and senior management of involved financial organisations for up to seven years.

As with all news articles where Russia is involved in, take it with a pinch of salt. One day their view on Bitcoin is beyond hostile, while the other day nothing seems to be a problem.

And, like China, they will dose everyone with retcon and ban/criminalize it again to crash the markets, rinse and repeat.
