Who is to blame for digital material piracy? Bitcoin or the pirate sites?

I fail to see how a global, decentralized payment system is "responsible" for pirate sites, which have existed long before Bitcoin even came into the picture. Its this kind of intellectually lazy authorship that makes it easy for the critics of Bitcoin to pick up on half-baked criticisms as if they're a real "thing".

Bitcoin has nothing to do with the origins of piracy or the push for free information over the internet. Its patently ridiculous to point at Bitcoin as the source for anything other than financial freedom.

I agree. The article is just trying either two things. One, probably just want to spark up some interest in bitcoin by including it in the article. Two, probably, they want to tarnish the image of bitcoins by linking it in some way to illegal activities. Bitcoins are a digital currency used by many who are based online, it may be linked to piracy but it is not the fault of bitcoins that piracy is proliferating.

Even if Bitcoin had something in common with the pirate party (but it doesn't) how can that be a bad thing? While torrent sites like TPB are seen by some people as thieves, me and many people that I know oppose this view. Sharing is not stealing, it has been there since the beginning of times. When you buy a movie, nobody can tell you who you can or cannot watch it with and if you can or cannot lend it to someone. This article is so low that it can't be called journalism.

Actually there is not a sentence in that article stating that Bitcoin is bad or that Bitcoin is to blame for the widespread piracy of digital content. Pirate parties encourage piracy in the first place, so even if Bitcoin was to blame for that they wouldn't consider it a "Negative Side". IMO the title is just wrong.

Looks like a complete fake storty to mee , no dutch negative stopies about bitcoin ever yold by prirate party in NL!
Arrr!
I'm with cr1776 and almost everybody above, "junk article" not only shivering me timbers but makes everything rumbling deep inside. There are two things to hope for. Small reach of that publication site. Low interest on reader's side, since they are splashing something onto the tabloid like Pirate Party and Piratebay which are ... worn out by now.

The Dutch pirate party is demanding the Dutch Government allow every citizen to choose the kind of currency they want to use, including when paying for state services. The Dutch pirate party is one of the over 40 pirate parties worldwide.

The pirate party is a community of youth who want free sharing of information and culture on the internet. Copyrighted material is not excluded from the materials available for free download on the Piratebay.org, a site that follows the ideologies of the pirate parties. Bitcoin enables the transfer of funds anonymously, which allows the maintenance of these pirate parties and hosting the Piratebay.org website.

Could as well be titled: "The Negative Side of the Euro". The dollar, yen etc since any of them can be used.

Pretty junky article/title.
