India is marching steadfastly towards a digital economy with Budget 2017 supporting the digitalisation agenda. The December 2016 Watal Committee on Digital Payments recommended testing the digital rupee.

The Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) is drawing a similar conclusion. With the hype on blockchain — a distributed database that maintains a constantly growing list of ordered records, or blocks — deflated, we need to further assess the shortfalls of this lucrative technology and the surfacing advantages behind the digital rupee ‘printing machine’.
