The article talks about energy efficiency but it says nothing about the effectiveness of the production of coins. If Samsung will earn 1 Satoshi per hour and thus do not consume energy, it will be a useless toy. I think it's just the concept of Samsung which would have continue. I understand that there is no one prototype in order to be able to talk about it. With regard to the protection I saw an alarm that uses a Siemens 35. He's not even a smartphone. What to do 5s?

I highly doubt this setup would be energy efficient to do anything else other than be a mobile phone. Because if they could be "upcycled" to perform better than their original purpose, then they're either guilty of not building energy-efficient phones in the first place, or have seriously underestimated the hashing power required to have any significant returns on Bitcoin mining. They probably are better off going for something like... Bitcoin Gold Wink

Just because 8 phones are better at mining Bitcoin than a desktop computer doesn't make it a great achievement.

Nice try Samsung, kudos all the same to your engineers for a bit of creativity but you've got to see the funny side of this.

Well, Samsung is doing it right! Their marketing team is doing all they can to salvage what they have in order to grab every opportunity there is in the market. This move is fitting to the new breed of people who are into Bitcoins.

I think this is the best thing they did, by far, in terms of marketing phenomena.

We should now look forward to what other competing companies will come up with.

I think with all these things happening, Bitcoins' popularity will be more evident day by day until one day you realize it becomes a basic need. Who knows, right?

Samsung’s new ‘upcycling’ initiative has seen the company repurpose outdated technology for novel and creative utilities, including the construction of a bitcoin mining rig from out of old smartphones.
The ‘Upcycling’ Program Has Seen the Company Turn 40 Used Galaxy S5s Into a Bitcoin Mining Rig
Although scant technical specifications have been made available regarding the rig, Samsung has reportedly claimed that eight Samsung Galaxy S5s can mine with superior energy efficiency compared to a standard desktop computer.

The mining rig was unveiled during a recent Samsung developer conference held in San Francisco. The rig is the brainchild of Samsung’s Creative Lab – an internal hub for innovation and development within Samsung that is located at the Samsung Digital City in Korea.

Aside from the cryptocurrency mining rig, Samsung program has also seen an old Galaxy table turned into an ubuntu-powered laptop, and a Galaxy S3 smartphone repurposed to monitor a fishtank. The company has also utilized an old phone featuring facial recognition software as the basis for the home security system.

I am actually amazed that Samsung was able to develop this idea of "Bitcoin Mining Mobile". It is also a sign that big companies such as Samsung, who is one of the leading tech products in worldwide, is also jumping into the Bitcoin development. Sooner or later, they may also develop hardware and equipment that can develop the Bitcoin mining making it more efficient and effective. Also, they may soon develop applications regarding to Bitcoin activities like for forums or tradings that will be user friendly and easy to access.

Gotta love samsung for even trying to attempt projects like this,
Obviously they don't do it to be profitable (yet..) but more as a cool thing to show off for now.

Dump it!!!
it's good to see a big cooperation like samsung making headlines for the right reasons and exploring the blockchain technology through mining...and if this happens to be energy and cost efficent sells kof these devices might just increase or we might see a new line of gadgets made for this purpose.

Mining Bitcoin with old mobile phones is stupid. The difficulty is simply too high and the gain from this will be negligible. If

they mined one of these Alt coins with a lower difficulty and ASIC resistance, they might have made some profits that

are actually worth something. I am all for "re-cycling" but it should be more efficient/profitable for people to do this, for

people to continue doing this.  Wink

Maybe it was a misunderstanding and they were actually mining Monero or Ethereum, because journalists often mistake them for Bitcoin when it comes to mining - for example, during the recent browser mining plague they were often claiming that visitors have to mine Bitcoin. And if this rig is more than just bundling together a bunch of old smartphones, if they made some changes to hardware to essentially turn them into ASICs, than it might be really profitable.

They claimed 8 Samsung Galaxy S5s can mine with superior energy efficiency compared to a standard desktop computer, but how about hashrate? results?
whether this development really aim to support bitcoin mining or just wants to maintain the value of their devices in long term.
However, it's better than nothing, people could re-sell their old devices and Samsung may recycle all of those devices, win-win solution.

I have exactly the same reflections. It isn't profitable to mine bitcoin with dozens of Samsung Galaxy S5, asics took the lead years ago. For altcoins, it depends.
For maintaining the value of their devices, i don't think so, because these companies try every year to lunch a new model and to remove the support from the previous ones.
Recycling could be a solution, but people need to pic the right choice.

They said it'll outgun a desktop computer which does indeed mean it's a toy. It's a very cool one all the same. It's a concept.

As sites are now mining with your browser it's about time we saw phones and other devices mining alts too.

Just look at hashrates new phones with Snapdragon 835 are getting. It's not even close to profitable. I don't see why would anyone purchase that old phone for even 50$ when no profit can be made (in a normal time, eventually I guess you will profit from it)

Where did they get this idea from? Cheesy But if I think again, it's not even that stupid. Those smartphones are kind of outdated, they wouldn't be able to sell them to customers so at least they found a use for them. I have doubts about their energy efficiency claims but I guess they're not lying. I am not sure about profitability but I see this potential in this project from environmental perspective because they re-used (recycled) old devices.
I think it would be better if they just took CPU chip out of the phone and build a mining rig just from those circuit boards so the cooling would be easier.

I think that is one of the most genius ideas which ever would be taken! Bravo Samsung! I am supporting every recycling program, and turning used phones and tablets into mining of bitcoin is not just profitable company, but for the whole planet and humanity in general.
