What if he's really busy with some other projects and needs to escape from the community. We all know how the community can be, repeating the same questions over and over and asking for updates. I'm surprised that he stayed active for so long. Whether ETH continues to be popular or not will depend on the market and the market depends on Bitcoin. If another rally starts all coins will go crazy high, even the less popular ones.

Considering that Buterin is known for its somewhat bombastic statements, maybe this is only one more in a row and nothing else. Unlike some others developers he like media attention, so we can very often see his interviews or tweets. Some month ago he comment Jeremy Rubin ( developer of Bitcoin Core ) who say that “The collapse of ETH is inevitable.”, and he agreed with him - but in context that Ethereum needs to change from PoW to PoS.

yes, you may want to add Dogecoin to the list
now that the development is almost non-existent , dgc is a huge pump and dump top 50 coin  Tongue

Although Dogecoin is known as some joke crypto, it has a very strong community and great support. Recent price increase is not just classic pump&dump scheme, it is associated with Dogethereum-Bridge. This will enable Doge to use Ethereum network, and this is big news for this coin.

Recently, Buterin even admitted the possibility that ethereum could fall in price to zero. Perhaps this was one of the reasons because of which this coin went down in value. Here, at least, he expresses the opinion that this coin will live without its participation. In general, this will not give ethereum popularity if he leaves his project.

etherium price fell not because of Buterin admitting the possibility of it  fall to zero
but because of the cryptomarket shrinking and because etherium was overvalued, among many other reasons
I can agree to ETH not gaining additional popularity if Vitalik "leaves" the project, but at the moment he is doing to etherium same things
as Ilon Mask is doing for Tesla Smiley so I am not sure which option is worse

This decision can result in a similar situation LTC is facing after its creator detached himself from the currency. The only difference is that Charlie did it when LTC was mooning and Vitalik is doing it when ETH is low.
I think that holding significant amounts of the currency and being actively involved in the project by the founders doesn't have to be a bad influence. These projects have managed to stay afloat for many years and keep breaking previous highs with them onboard.

Vitalik might have other projects in mind if he suddenly is talking about detaching himself from Ether?
it will not collapse without him for sure, but I would not trust my money to some semi-abandoned coin that is also challenged by some new, promising upstarts
that have pretty much same potential and features, like NEO, for example

It seems to me that Buterin is finally realized that his ETH like all others altcoins completely depend on BTC and in the case of ETH not depend only of him as he obviously thought before. It is possible that he just want test how the community will react on such news, but it is also possible that he have some other project and he will focus his time on that.

Still, it does not seem to me that Buterin has real intent to leave his project, he is just too deep in it.

Satoshi already proven to us that "centralized" decision making is not necessary for a coin to succeed. I think Vitalik made enough money from this project and he wants to jump ship before it goes down in flames.

Ethereum had it's fair share of problems over the years and they wanted to cover too many bases at the same time. In the beginning they were known for specializing in smart contracts and then they wanted to be a currency, when Bitcoin suffered scaling problems.  Roll Eyes

I would even like to say that Ethereum would be far better off without Vitalik being the main pillar that most of the economical forces there look up to.

He's a smart kid, knows what he's talking about, but there is too much power centered within him that he either doesn't see as a problem, or completely discard because he simply doesn't care. I really have the impression that Ethereum isn't following what's good for itself, but what Vitalik thinks is good for Ethereum. That's exactly why I am glad Satoshi isn't part of Bitcoin anymore.

I was far from a fan of Buterin boy, but even I have to say he got a lot better at his arguments when he finally acknowledged Ethereum's issues and stopped trying to be a leader (so actually, I guess he does care a little more about that now once he recognised it). Definitely reminds me of Lee for Litecoin, and definitely agree their projects would do so much better without a person to look up to.

And definitely agree with Satoshi not being part of Bitcoin. He/They understood the implications far earlier than we did, and Bitcoin became so much the better for it after outgrowing Satoshi years ago.

I don't get how someone as supposedly crypto savvy allowed himself to be anointed with that position in the first place. And it's doubly barking that he's talking about this now and not several years previously.

We don't know what Vitalik did or will do with his coins. We only know what we read, and what we read isn't always what actually happened or will happen.

Vitalik Buterin: «I think Ethereum Can Absolutely Survive Me»

According to the recent tweet by Vitalik Buterin, the Ethereum network would “absolutely survive” without its core developer, so Vitalik is actually “detaching himself” from Ether. The opinion has been expressed when Ethereum's issues were discussed, as well as the altcoins on the ETH basis, and all this, in general, led to compare Vitalik's impact on the network and its present state together. Buterin said:

"I think ethereum can absolutely survive me spontaneously combusting tomorrow at this point".

The segregation between the creator and his project seems to be "in progress", considering that a number of studies, subprojects are being led by other people.
