Many people from all corners of the globe can now support Wikipedia - the well-known free encyclopedia, with Bitcoin Core (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) donations through BitPay. The news was first declared by BitPay via Twitter and their other verified website.

Why are you using those weasel words in your headline? No one other than Bcash whack jobs call Bitcoin Bitcoin Core.

Likewise, no one other than Bitcoin Core whack jobs call Bitcoin Cash Bcash.

If you want to destroy cred your phraseology counts.

Let's be fair. There's bitcoin, and there's Bitcoin Cash. The etymology of Bcash does not have sinister roots. It was the name given to Bitcoin Cash around the time of the fork by Bitfinex, in order to help differentiate the two for the sake of their customers.

BCH retained the word "bitcoin" in their name because they (or Roger anyway) was sure it would eventually replace BTC as most dominant coin. Well, of course that never came close to happening. So now they really should consider ditching the "Bitcoin" part of their name... But I really doubt Bitcoin Gold, Diamond or Private is going to do that too, so...

Referring to BTC as "Bitcoin Core" is still dishonest, however. And I never click on links to this website.

Bitcoin cash is just a shitcoin anyway, they are thinking that people will want to lose their pocket change and dump it somewhere, may as well be for something that is a good cause.

I stand with Ukraine.
~ To be honest, I didn't know they previously accepted Bitcoin donations. I still don't see it on their donation page.

It's right here: https://donate.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ways_to_Give#Bitcoin

Wikipedia has been accepting donations in BTC since 2014.

https://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/07/30/wikimedia-foundation-now-accepts-bitcoin/

So, I think the purpose of this article is drawing attention to BCH mainly.

I don't get the reason why BCH was accepted. They said it was because their donors were interested in different cryptos, but why BCH? Why not LTC? or XLM if they want to get the lowest fee as possible?

Something sounds off.
BitPay has the banking side working in its advantage, and that's a very important aspect for any kind of business or site. Another thing is that BitPay pops up almost everywhere as first search result, which helps too.

Overall, I don't even think there is much incentive from altcoiners to actually use it as money, so there isn't much to lose in this case. It sounds very maximalist, but it's the hard reality.

Let's see how long it will take before Wikipedia is done with this political nonsense involving BitPay and stops accepting crypto entirely. It's more of a hassle if you think logically, especially when people mail Wikipedia instead of BitPay for support.

Because coinidol is not only an extremely shitty news site with no fact checking and authors often presenting their opinions as facts, they are also working for Roger Ver and promote his narrative.

Maybe it's time we finally start ignoring this outlet and stop giving them clicks? Though this board as a whole became so much worse in the recent year, so maybe someone should brought this up in Meta. Also, why is Garzik still a mod here?

Well,I guess that the Wikipedia team don't cares about what type of bitcoin should be donated to them. They just want donations. Grin
Right. BitPay offers merchants the option to accept only one of the two currencies, but it obviously is a way better option to accept more crypto's than just one. Too bad they are sucked into this political nonsense in an instant, all thanks to the propaganda machine powered by Roger Ver.

Bitpay should implement more cryptocurrencies in their payment processor for sure.
They won't. Roger and Bitmain have so much of a say, that they won't ever allow any other crypto currency to be listed, because if they do, it would instantly devalue BCash, because the only thing BCash has going for itself, is being cheap. Litecoin is cheap, faster, more decentralized, and thus more censorship resistant, and is scalable as well.

Accepting any other currency means bye bye 'use case' for BCash. Cheesy

Seriously, there's no reason to post clickbait articles from Coinidol -- they love to perpetuate that kind of garbage. BitPay put out a press release on their site. Obviously, there was no mention of "Bitcoin Core." Roll Eyes

I'm not sure. They may have just wanted to change payment processors and landed on BitPay, who supports only BTC and BCH. To be honest, I didn't know they previously accepted Bitcoin donations. I still don't see it on their donation page.

Because it's Bitpay who are providing the payment processing and Bitpay are Bitmain's bitch and will do what their agenda dictates, maybe even long after Bitmain disappears. Bitpay pretty much does everything it can to discourage Bitcoin usage while still enriching itself from it.

The non-profit framework and worldwide nature of the establishment mean it has to look for a universal, cosmopolitan and cost-effective payment solution, which, in this case, is cryptocurrencies.
