Djoker played a good game but lets not forget how far he is behind on the career slams list.  He is only sitting at 7 titles while Federer has 20 and nadal has 17.  I think Djokavic had the potential to catch up to Roger but he was too incosistent over his career.  He is still one of the greats but he often gets overshadowed by Nadal/Federer when talking about this era.

All 3 are legends of the sport, it’s rare for it to be so damn competitive as it has been in their era. Don’t forget Murray, he was great too.

Happy to see Djokovic win today.

Finally Djokovic made a good play and has won the trophy. Congrats to every gambler who made it their day placing bets on Djokovic. 2017 Australia open is one among the event that lead me towards a big loss in gambling. Till that day I was successful, without big losses. On that particular match I placed the bet on Nadal. Till the last set Nadal was in lead. Further Federer took 6 continuous point and won the set and the trophy.

Final - Nadal vs Djokovic

This should be a titanic battle between two of the greats. I simply can’t call it. It could go either way.

And it's over now. Djokovic wins this years Australia Open in just 3 sets, 6-2/6-3/6-3. I never thought that the match will end this way as everyone is hoping for a exciting match. I would say that he completely obliterated Nadal and firming his grip as the number player. Anyone surprised at the results as well?

Looking at the game, I thought Djokovic dominated Nadal in the game. That's the reason why I go for Djokovic to win the championship and be the number 1 tennis player in men's category.

Djokovic of course !
Looking forward to watch the game.

Loved how he just rolled over Lucas Pouille. French tennismen... my god. They should be ashamed.

Gonna quote Lucas:

Quote
He (Novak) was incredible through the whole match. He did everything perfectly. [...] I knew what to expect. [...] When he plays 30cm from the line it is difficult to take risks. He was way stronger (than me) today. I couldn't use the strategy I wanted. I was waiting for a short ball, it never came.

Nadal is on a different stratos right now.  He just steamrolled out of the best young prospect in Tsitipas. A lot though that this is going to be a big test for Rafa but as we have witnessed already, he just breezes through the finals without dropping a set.

I agree that he is not the favorite to win in the beginning, but the odds have change. So let's wait for the semis between Djoker and Pouille. But I guess it doesn't matter as Rafa is too good right now.

Hey it’s true the way he breezed past Tsitsipas was phenomenal, even by his own standards he played an outstanding game. Nadal was the favourites to win, but there was lot of hopes on the youngster to give him tough competition, but when he’s in top form there’s nothing one can do. I’m torn apart between choosing who to root for as Djokovic and Nadal both are my favourites, I believe we shall see one long finale again.

Yes, there's even few tennis pundit that say Tsitsipas would win, but he didn't offer anything for Nadal and even after the first set, you will noticed that its all over. And that bagel in the third set tell it all.

I don't know, maybe Tsitsipas got starstruck with Nadal or simply that Nadal is really phenomenal in this tournament. It's really hard to choose if the two champions face in the finale of AO, but the way Nadal is playing, its hard not beat against him.

Djokovic looks favourite to me, he’s just breezing past everybody in 2nd gear. It will take something soecial to beat him but there are players who can.

Of course there are players who can beat Djokovic. Anybody can beat somebody as long as they are determined to defeat that guy. As for Djokovic, yes he plays well in Australian open but as long as Nadal is there, his victory is still not for certain.

Just watched the highlights of bautista Agut V Tsitsipas what a 4 setter!
It may be worth a long shot to put a bet on him beating Nadal.
He has talent and a really confident positive attitude.

I have a feeling this will be the end of the road for Ranoic.
I can see Pouille beating him in five sets.
The last match he beat a healthy and quick Coric with some fancy shots around the net.
Can not count the french men out.

How right you were, Pouille had a great match, Im not sure he
will beat Djokovic though, although I would like to see him in
the final. It is nice to see the younger generation coming through.

Nadal to me looks now like the Favourite. He was simply stunning
against Tsitipas, different level, even for Nadal.

Coming back to this as I am very hyped! Stefanos Tsitsipas has made it to the Semi-finals disqualifying Roger Federer and Bautista Agut. He is the youngest player to reach Slam semifinals since 2007!
Now he has a difficult game, probably against Nadal, but I have faith for the 41.00 odds so far. After all, reaching so close is a win!

Hey I’m happy for Stefanos and this is one incredible journey he’s having, but I feel he’ll find his match against Nadal. I believe Nadal shall be determined not be defeated by a youngster like him, I’m sure with his experience he’ll beat him. It’ll be indeed a thriller if he gives tough competition to Nadal, but deep down I’m sure he’ll know it’s next to impossible to beat Nadal.

Back on topic, tempted to place a small wager on Kei Nishikori to reach the final. He is in great form. Very good odds even though it is still a long shot.

Nishikori is one of the tennis players that will make a difference and show up in the coming years. He is also very well prepared for the Australian Open as I can read in the news.
I am also in favor of a new talented guy Stefanos Tsitsipas who has shown some skills lately (he is No.15 in ranking and he has won Intrum Stockholm Open 2018). I think that it is a good option as the odd for him are at 41.00 which may give a good profit.

Woow main draw for AO 2019. is done. So Novak Djokovic potentially can meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in round 2. That match will remind us of some old days.....when these two were at their beginnings. Logically Nole is far better player but it will be mental game.... ghosts from the past times.

Djokovic 2.30
Federer 8.00
Nadal 8.20
Zverev 9.50

Tempted to place a bet on Zverev, nice odds, I believe Federer is done physically, same for Nadal (will too rusty at least), while the favorite is Djokovic I think it's time for Zverev to step up and go far, maybe capitalize on an early crash for Nadal or Federer.

Zverev won the ATP finals while he was at odds 20 before the tournament, it's time to back him to win a slam.

Any constructive opinion welcome.

Zverev maybe young and athletic but Djokovic will still dominate him. Even with lower odds, it best to pick Djokovic to win the championship. Yet, if I'm going to bet play by play, I would bet for Federer coz he still has the talent even without the gas.
To be fair Roger Federer played fantastic today for his first match of the season (won 6-1, 6-1 to Cameron Norrie, it was an exhibition but players usually are serious when playing the Hopman Cup). But my concern still remains his fitness.

Novak Djokovic was great too in Abu Dabi, one thing is for sure, no way Roger Federer will win if he eventually bumps into Novak Djokovic. He will need to avoid it to win the title.

No, Federer should not avoid Djokovic but defeat him instead to win the title. I know it's hard for him to defeat Djokovic but we will never know until they meet in the court. Federer might have aged but Djokovic also has issues with his injuries.

I still believe age cannot hold Roger Federer down when he is in the mood, Djokovic and all the other guys are no match for Federer in his hay days and i trust him to beat off competition from these guys and even extend his record in Australia this season.
Please remind me when was the last time Roger Federer managed to beat Novak Djokovic in a slam?
I think the answer is 2012. The last time I cam remember him getting close enough for 2014 Wimbledon.

I don´t think Nadal is done, he may surprise everyone. He is not as old as Federer, who is really done physically.

Well Federer looks done physically but he pulls off surprises from time to time and when he gets in the mood of his vintage best nobody can stop him so i will give all of them the credit but Djokovic stands tall and might win the Grand slam but we shouldn't write off the old folks.

Tsonga is honestly a bad player. And I am french.

This guy has 0 humility, he loses his temper, his concentration. He is unable to play at the same level 2 days in a row. I hate him and his game.

Hm Tsonga is a real mystery, looks like the guy lost interest for the game which brought him wealth and status. Ok, he was troubled with injuries and he never dived deep to get back on the track as soon as possible. Became a father and spent lots of time off the court (that's stg. Fed, Djoker, Rafa never did). Now his serve and fh are good, but opponent make exploits hitting into his backhand side. He needs improvement on bh, and court speed.

I don't know if you guys have read this news.

https://www.news.com.au/sport/tennis/rafael-nada-has-pulled-out-of-the-brisbane-international/news-story/9d00287c765a7433dba08b2fd82e3ec2

So he gifted Tsonga a win and advance to the next round. We understand his concerns though, we all know that he is not getting any younger and the injuries are taking its toll on his body.

I read this news and it's very sad that he's withdrawn from the tournament, he looked rusty but I wasn't expecting him to pull out. I'll agree he's not getting any younger, but those injuries keep on coming he really needs to address those before coming back. I believe Nadals absence is a golden chance for other players, to try and win as they won't have to face him.

I am looking forward to see the Nadal vs Tsonga match. I always found Tsonga an aggressive player but unfortunately he has not win any Grand Slam tournaments.

Who can remember the match between Tsonga and Federer in London O2 arena? I can remember the match was one of the longest match in tennis history.

A bit offtopic since he is not really a candidate for the title but watch out for Alex De Minaur, I think he will have a great year and win at least 3 or 4 slams in his career. He is like Lleyton Hewitt but with a more aggressive game. I love watching this kid.
I hope I could find the odds for Alex De Minaur to win an ATP title this season, I am sure he will win at least one.

Aww, you made me feel nostalgic dude, I vividly remember Hewitt playing in my country in 1997, (damn it was long ago). Grin. Yeah, Alex is also one of the best prospects for Australia, it was a good 2018 for him, isn't he almost upset Zverev in the last Davis Cup in a 5 setter(tiebreak) game? Give him 3-5 years to develop and I"m sure he will be one to carry Australia again in Grand Slams.
He is a great breathe of fresh air for Australian tennis, since the likes of Bernard Tomic or Nick Kyrgios seem totally disinterested.
I watched today the match of Nick Kyrgios that he barely won, now I understand why the odds were of 1.55, I thought they were high odds, but bookies know better, he almost lost it. I chose not to bet on this match because it was the next day after New Year Eve and who knows in which condition the player will be. He looked like he did not care at all.

I will try to open a separate thread for Brisbane, perhaps some money to make on this first week of the season.

I agree. Seems that Novak Djokovic has his numbers. Roger Federer really needs to play perfect just to be able to beat Novak so it would be very difficult specially if your body is giving you a different signals already because of age.

For me Zverev is too risky, I don't think it is worth. I would rather play safe with Djokovic and put some big money. or, If I would like to take a risk, I would go into Nadal, no offense but Federer seems like out of this league, and Nadal is the only risk worth taking. But Djokovic is still my first choice though.

Not just in AO, but I'm seeing a new breed of young tennis players having a break out year in 2019. Guys like Tsitsipas, Shapovalov, Zverev, Coric, Nick Kyrgios will at least win a grand slam in 2019. Rafa and Federer is getting old and old injuries will re-occur so it's either they retire because it's going to be difficult to keep up with the young players of today, they are big, strong and agile.
It is not possible Angela, there are only 4 slams a year, or maybe you meant one of them. I rule out Nick Kyrgios, too immature, won't grow up until he is 25 or 26. Borna Coric has the right attitude but is too limited in terms of weapons.

By the way Rafa Nadal odds going up to 9.2 after his loss yesterday to Kevin Anderson.

Novak Djokovic odds going down to 2.20 after a solid performance so far this week in the exhibition he is playing.

I agree that Nick Kyrgios is very immature and inconsistent. What do you think about Tsitsipas though? He has a good run last year beating top players and ending the year inside the top 15 if I'm not mistaken.

As far as Roger, he has been carefully selecting tournaments though and might be concentrating on the big 4 that's why that's I still gave him a chance to get at least 1 of the 4 and maybe this Australian Open might be his last chance. But in any case, I do hope that this 2019 will be a good year for tennis. Maybe we can see Andy Murray returns, or if Roger and Rafa can still play against a lot and coming talented players

Not just in AO, but I'm seeing a new breed of young tennis players having a break out year in 2019. But as time has passed, I learned to respect Roger Federer, what he did in 2017 was truly remarkable, I think personality wise he has became better and more humble after a bad year in 2013.

he is an amazing athlete. But as a man he remains a douche to me.

Regarding Nadal, he is more humble in my opinion. However he has managed to get referees banned from Roland Garros because they gave him a warning when he was taking too much time to serve. He might be a champion, but he lost my respect when he showed that he believes that rules should'nt apply to him.

The RG organisers are also to blame in this matter. However they needed him to be there and had close to no leverage.
Also remember the cramping at the French Open this year in the final? Won the first two sets, got cramps in the third set (against Dominic Thiem), he literally went back to his chair in the middle of a service game to ask for a medical time out. Not sure why the umpire allowed it.

I secretly hope Nadal will tie Federer with 20 slams but you are right his attitude put me off sometimes.

By the way the bet I like this season is Nadal NOT to win the French Open. My intuition says he will have a bad year with many injury concerns.

What is likable about Federer?
He has always been a huge douchebag with good marketing skills.

Sure his level is incredible and he has done a lot for tennis. That doesn't make him a great guy.

Maybe you need to understand french and listen to his early days interviews to understand what kind of guy he is.

What everyone can see now is just a facade. I also appreciate his game tho. But I am always happy when more humble players than him defeat him.

Indeed he has great marketing skills but this comes because he is successful. I like and admire him as an athlete. You can't say that he is a bad guy or he behaves badly to others when you have never lived with him or spend some time together.
We can judge him as an athlete and IMHO he plays the best tennis for years. His technique, backhand, forehand etc. all his hits are amazing and he is the player anyone loves to see him playing.

I always preferred Rafa Nadal to Roger Federer.
Both could be seen as fake, but Rafa is probably this way because of the education he received from this uncle, he sounds like "fake" humble sometimes, but I think this mentality made him a champion. I never liked the comments from Roger Federer towards Novak Djokovic in the early days (2006, 2007), and his press conference after that loss to Nole at the US Open 2011.

To reply to Kemarit, I am 90% sure Roger is done winning slams. That loss at the US Open in the 4th round I really saw it coming. To win one more slam, he will need a great draw to win all matches in 3 sets or 4 sets max. The stamina is seriously declining. His return of serve is getting worse and worse. His movement is declining. His forehand is losing power. The field is getting really too strong for him.
Watch out for guys such as Karen Khachanov.

Smart bet here is clearly on Alexander Zverev, returning 10 times the money, worth a small stake for sure.

I would love to see Federer at the top as I am a big fan of him. He is too old and odds are against him for winning the tournament. If he is able to do so, it will be due to the disqualification of Djole.
Nadal cannot be 100% competitive, too many injuries have made him rusty and he underperforms.
2.30 for Djokovic is a decent odd for betting. Doubling your capital is not so bad I think and Zverev is an outsider and it is worth betting for him with such an odd.

Personally, I will bet for Djokovic a considerable amount, and also I will bet for Zverev with a small one. This way I will cover both options!

Hmm, I wouldn't say that Federer and Nadal although old are done in any Grand Slams. I haven't seen any young prospect putting up a good showing in a tournaments specially in Grand Slam so I wouldn't discounted that maybe Novak or either Rafa of FedEx can still pull through in the Australian Open. Those young prospects really succumb in big tournaments so for me its nice to put a bet on the top 3 and throw some of Zverev just because of the good odds.

Well the way I see this is to split money and place two bets: 1 Djoker because he come back from nowhere last year and generally Australia is good hunting zone for him. Still very potent and can deliver his best game.
2. Zverev because agile and young, showed that he can beat Djoker (same stands for the other two players), Zverev needs GS so badly.
Right now Fed looks far from top players and tough Australian conditions will be obstacle for the man aged 38.
Rafa great champ and fighter but didn't play last couple months, his knees are very problematic and AU is played on hard courts.
For some reason I expect Berdych to reach QF (also coming from injury), Khachanov can push deep in this GS as conditions suit his aggressive game.

I think that Zverev doesn't stand a chance here.

I would be betting Djokovic.
The bet is actually not that bad regarding the situation.

I think as Djokovic lost to Zverev in straight sets in Nitto ATP Finals, I think he could really be a contender. Maybe he has really focused on what he lacked during that match and knowing that he was anxious with that. We all know that he is the top player in a way, defeating Federer in Cincinnati.

I think Djokovic is still the one going to be victorious. That's still going to be my bet.

I wasn't aware of Nadal jam packed schedule I'm bit surprised especially after the injuries he had, I thought he would be selective where he'll play. I believe Zverev has the potential to cause upsets he's shown that by beating Federer and Djokovic. I believe for him to be successful from now on he requires consistency, there's potential no doubt but without consistency he won't be able to win further tournaments.

I would consider Zverve a risky but worth taking bet, if you believe he can cause an upset. In my personal opinion Nadal would be coming after a long injury break and he'll be at his best to keep his number one status intact. I'll agree with you on federer I don't expect much from him, he's way past his peak. I would however not consider Djokovic out of the equation, as he will do all to become number one again. I would advise you to check their injury status before you place a bet.

Nadal is no longer number one. And I am a big fan but I don't think he'll have a shot at the #1 spot again. I saw his schedule for 2019 and he intends to play too many tournaments. Just look Smiley https://www.menstennisforums.com/2-general-messages/955846-2019-rafael-nadal-schedule.html absolutely crazy, will ruin his chances to do well at Wimbledon and the US Open. .. and as I was saying, I think he is too rusty for the Australian Open, hope to be wrong, would love to see him win there again.

Well that's the plan but usually players like Nadal and Federer just don't go any more full circuit tournaments and just chooses which tournament they want to join specially Grand Slams. But I would agree that Zverev is a good bet here. He was inconsistent last year but was able to win the last trophy during the 2018 calendar beating Djokovic so it's worth the risk putting money on Zverev.
