I don't think it's a good idea to send the treasure to the moon. There are a lot of people who won't be able to do it, but at least they have the knowledge and the time to do it.

As far as I know, the moon is the most powerful moon in the universe, and it's going to be the most powerful moon in the universe.

Elon Musk never disappoints when he wants the world to get engaged in such activities, thumbs up and another win for bitcoin Smiley

Btw what Musk did, is one way to fire up people's interest to get into space  exploration but how much will it cost for an ordinary citizen to get on one of these space shuttle's for this journey to the moon to go treasure hunting..

Will our community be putting together an expedition to the moon?    Grin
Do we have astronauts in our community or anybody will be eligible for this experience  Roll Eyes

Haha omg, what a stunt!
Well, considering where Bitcoin might be headed within the next 10+ years, maybe there will truely be an incentive to retrive the keys at some point in time.
Bounty could  be worth 5 or 10 times more in the next few year's and if this goes beyond 100million  or so maybe many people will have the interest to go to the moon hope stuff there  doesn't  fade or rot with time.

I really wonder where they got the idea to send 62 BTC to Moon, why not 20 or 50 BTC, for example?

Probably because at the time of the decision it was worth around $1.5 million and that's the amount of money they were supposed to be getting from their NFT sale.
So, it was a publicity stunt to gain some more sales as only 25% of the value of the NFTs will go to the moon!

Now, the interesting part will be to watch Elon's reaction!
Since this is not something he oversees directly as the rover is the property of another company that just sells space for the trip for whoever wants to buy some, and probably he has found out over Twitter I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to paint the whole rocket with a Shiba picture or demand that at least the rover would need to get a paint job.

curious to know your view. with such plan in going to the moon, what is it for LunarCrush and Elon ?

LunarCrush just sold a few million worth of NFTs and SpaceX is getting paid by Lunar Outpost (a different company) to get their rover to the moon!

I think it's an interesting idea, not because of a treasure hunt or the like, but in the form of promoting the forum. A BTT flag on the Moon or something similar would certainly not cost much, but it is still a serious project that should involve a lot of people🚀

hope to be alive to witness something like this happen in the future where multiple groups plans to fly up there to find the coins. and some groups are just waiting to ambush like pirates. the future is getting crazier by the day. or Elon could plan what he will be doing after this like launching reality TV show where participants can go to the moon and find the key.

I really wonder where they got the idea to send 62 BTC to Moon, why not 20 or 50 BTC, for example?...

Perhaps because it is a palindrome in base 5 or perhaps because it has divisors of 2 and 31 and 2^31 is 2147483648?
Or maybe in base 3 -> 2022  which if you add the digits you have 204 and then rearrange it to 420?  lol
Perhaps though it has to do with the symbol for element #62:  SM

This project is also a "tongue in the cheek" pun to the saying that most Bitcoiners repeat over and over.... namely, that the Bitcoin price is going to the Moon.  Tongue  In any way..... nobody will fund a project to search for those bitcoins now, because that is roughly worth about $1 800 000 now.... but if the price really goes to the Moon.. we might have a new Lazlo event, where those bitcoins might end up being a few hundred million dollars.  Cheesy

Elon Musk know how to hype up something... and this is going to get a lot of publicity in the media. So hopefully someone see his vision and take him up on the challenge.  Wink

Meanwhile I am just curious to see to which levels Musk will push Doge and if there will indeed ever be an implementation within twitter.

I really wonder where they got the idea to send 62 BTC to Moon, why not 20 or 50 BTC, for example? Apart from that, I don't really like the idea that the private key will be engraved on the rover, and that it will be documented as they say - I hope that this does not mean that there will be a picture of the private key.

Although the idea is interesting, I think it will be a very long time until someone starts hunting for "treasure" on the Moon, because the price of traveling there and returning to Earth is far greater than the current value of those BTC, although that value will certainly change in the future. An epic fail would be if the rocket explodes and "burns" those 62 BTC, of course, unless the private key is "documented" somewhere safe.
I am also curious too why he chose that number. Maybe it is some kind of easter egg or something? Aside from that I am also concern whether that rocket will explode or not and who would even risk treasure hunting in space even in the future? Who knows how large the space is and where will they even start looking for clues regarding the rocket if it happens it'll explode somewhere and let's just say the priv keys are stored safely on that aircraft.

His view towards things is really bizarre. Maybe this is just him feeding his inner childhood fulfilling his dreams or just something due to his inconsistent behavior. We really don't know what's on his mind.

The idea is just to literally make BTC go to da mooooon!
~snip~

But this idea is actually not new, because I remembered that a few years ago I had already read something similar and it turned out that someone had already come up with a similar idea to send Bitcoin to the moon, only that then the amount was much smaller and it was about physical coin.

I can't say how that mission ended and whether it came true at all, but as it started, it seems that this is not the last attempt to send BTC to the Moon, although I personally expect that someone will send it a little further, maybe to Mars Roll Eyes

The idea is just to literally make BTC go to da mooooon!  But who is going to travel going to the moon to hunt the keys?
If they have to pay such a huge amount just to get there. Why wouldn't they just use the amount to buy BTC as it's a sure thing they get some BTC than hunting up there.  Someone should just tell him which is a good idea and which is a stupid idea.

Elon Musk And His Company To Fly Bitcoin To The Moon

LunarCrush, in a recent press release, revealed its plan to take the world's first digital asset and the world's largest crypto asset by market capitalization Bitcoin to the moon.

Since Bitcoin is digital, the proponents of this initiative will send the treasure in the form of a private key to a crypto wallet that contains 62 Bitcoins or approximately $1.7 million, based on the current prevailing rate.
___

This initiative is a treasure hunt of some sort and will be obtained by the first person who lands on the moon and finds the private key. Smiley
