Reissues, in my view, are fantastic in the situation you mentioned: you can get a great Syd Barrett record to listen to without breaking the bank. The majority of the time, though, it moves in the opposite direction. For example, last weekend I was in a shop that was selling a repress of "The Worst of Jefferson Airplane" for $30! That's a record worth $2-$5.
As others have said, I wouldn't bet on represses appreciating in value significantly, but there's no way to know for sure.

I've got a collection from my father, with several records I'd love to listen to, e.g. the Revolver by Beatles, or Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde. But right now I have no turntable to play them on, and I'm stuck in trying to choose anything that wouldn't destroy my vinyls. As I'm a newbie in turntables, I tried to check out some information on the net and read several reviews, for example here https://www.whathifi.com/best-buys/hi-fi/best-turntables or here https://www.officialtop5review.com/portable-record-players/, and many others. But there are so many different opinions, and I can't come to any conclusion. I'd rather buy something versatile and all-in-one, but heard that such items are a waste of money. IMHO: the best experience is directly from the label or band. Granted, I listen to a lot of music on small/indie labels, so that's easy for me. My favourites to date are Asian Man, No Sleep, Dr Strange (they also are a general online record store) and Bridge Nine. Have also bought a lot from Epitaph directly.
For mainstream stuff, there are tons of options, I've had good experiences with srcvinyl, and interpunk (the latter better for the stuff I normally try to get from the band/label directly, but they recently started carrying a lot more variety).
For used/aftermarket stuff, people have had decent (sometimes mixed, since its person-to-person) experience with discogs.
I sub to the 'audiophile USA' newsletter - they deal mostly in collectable stuff and are priced accordingly. I have never bought from them but they seem legit. I have been turned onto some great music from their newsletter. Worth looking at.

I spent £11k on records before closing the shop, which would retail about £18k, had another £8k new retail in stock, plus £13k vintage retail in stock, then bought more collections which I've never priced

The problem from what I understand was that the albums I'm looking for were released in the late 90s, right around the time that CDs were what everyone cared about, so they didn't make many vinyls for their albums. So one of them they only printed 600 of them, which is what's lead to the huge uptick in price.
