Peridot is not only the August birthstone but it's a beautiful stone that may people love for its intense yellow-Green color and wonderful brilliance. This stone hails from Burma and is a nice symmetrical square shape with a classic step cut. It is very well-cut so there is a lot of brilliance from inside the stone. This is the result of proper angles chosen by the cutter to showcase the stone's ability to reflect light. Different stones need different angles- if you cut an amethyst the same way it would lose most of its brilliance. Different stones bend light in different ways, and this is critical to how the cutter chooses to shape the stone.
You might also notice that as you look at this stone the facet junctures- where the lines come together that the cutter has made- look "soft". In real life when you see it you will notice that they are actually doubled when you look into the stone from above! This isn't magic, it is called "double refraction". This just means that a ray of light is split apart as it enters the stone. Stones like peridot and amethyst are both doubly refractive but there is a huge difference. With peridot, the two rays of light are far apart, but with amethyst or citrine the two rays are very close together. Because of the distance between the two rays of light the facet junctions appear doubled.
Diamond and garnet are both singly refractive. When a ray of light goes in, a ray of light comes out. There is no splitting- no double refraction. But sapphire, emerald, ruby, amethyst, and peridot are all doubly refractive. Of all of these stones just mentioned peridot is the stone that splits light the most- that is, the two rays of light are the farthest apart.
Peridot has an extremely long history as it has been mined since 1500BC from St. John's Island in the Egyptian Red Sea. Peridot still comes from Egypt, but the primary sources are Burma and China. Of these two, Burmese is considered the best quality. In the future I will also offer some exceptional quality peridot that I buy from my Pakistani contacts and which is mined in Pakistan.
This stone weighs 3.23 carats and measures 9.08 x 9.02 x 5.16mm deep. It is completely untreated- it has been mined from the earth in Burma, then cut and polished ONLY. It has not been heated or fissure-filled or chemically treated. This is the natural color of fine Burmese peridot. This stone is VS clarity, or very slightly included.
