I'm currently using a Bitmain's PSU (1600watt=120$) in my rig with a Corsair hx1000i and it's running 100% stable, i have 3x1080ti, 3x1070ti, 1x1080 and 1x1060 (don't ask me why....). I recommend to use 8gb, i know, it's not necessary but it worth.

I built quite a lot mining rigs, but I dont think I could build a rig at that cheap, just 240$, it's really cheap. For my typical setting, I could briefly list the prices as following:

- CPU - Intel Celeron G3930 (91$)
- Mainboard ASUS ROG STRIX Z270E (135$)
- RAM 4 Gb (46$)
- SSD 64 Gb (38$)

And the most expensive one should be PSU, I dont know what's your PSU, but for my 8 P106-100 rig, I'm using Super Flower 1000W PSU (170$).  So the total price is already much more than your cost.

Most of these scenarios turn out to use old refurb PCs from office type environments, where you may get a tower case and a motherboard with a few spare PCIe slots. To run 8 GPUs I suspect the OP will also use the 3 to 1 PCIe adapter board and an additional PSU (as he admits to later).

While not necessarily a bad way to go, you got to consider that the gear is often 3-4 years old and was designed for office use, not necessarily 24/7 mining, so you may end up troubleshooting more that just using new equipment. There is also a high chance of getting some duds that slipped through the refurb process, so you may have shipping to deal with unless you can source locally. I would say if you are just deploying a few rigs, buying new components might be the best way to go, but for those who plan to scale big it may be worth the hassle of dealing with the headaches.

You will have to excuse me for not listing my part list, as they are not unlimited in supply and I dont want them disappearing Wink

This setup does assume I will be able to find 750w-850w 80+ PSUs for ~$70, 2 per 8 cards. I typically can find Corsair or EVGA products on sale from time to time and swipe up a few, so not much of an issue there... PSUs would be used to push 470s, 480s, 1070s, 1060s, etc.  Wouldnt be pushing 1080tis or 390xs or anything that power hungry, but if I did I would adjust the PSU accordingly.

Ultimately, I can get the base setup for $100-$110 before PSUs and Cards, for an 8 card rig.  It seemed like a good deal compared to what I had been looking at, but was curious if others knew of anything better... The responses seem to confirm it is good Smiley

I am sure I could set up one of those 12-24+ PCIE motherboards for similar or less overall cost, but I hear things begin to become more of a headache the more cards you add to a single motherboard.

Price wise Yes, however the question really is How reliable your cheap hardware? did you purchase those cheap brands or chinese products unbranded or cloned ones. mining is a 24/7 workhorse, the most pressured hardware will be your PSU and GPU's. so better choose a decent one for this two.
