What you are trying to do is achievable. I was running 1 x HD5870 and 1 x HD4870, but now I've got 3 x HD5870. I use MSI to overclock the cards independently, as the card in the middle gets very hot, so it only has a very mild GPU overclock. I've underclocked all 3 memory speeds.

Thanks! Nice to hear it could work, I gonna give it a try.

i've undercloked too the mem speed, i've noticed that a real slowdown appear under 180 190 mhz, from 200 and above no performance drop.

What do you guys think? Can they work together? I am planning to put them onto one motherboard running WinXP. Can I still use MSI Afterb to overclock them separately for each card, and still can overvolt the HD5870s slightly? Anyone running the combination above or similar?

The rest of the rig will consist of:
MSI 890FXA-GD70 (5x PCIE)
Corsair AX1200
USB flash 4 GB with WINXPPro installed, no HDD, no CD/DVD drive
2GB RAM
CPU: AMD Athlon II X250/Sempron 140, depends on what I find first

The HD5870s are of referencedesign so they push air out off the case. Still, I don't whether it will work.

My other rig which is 2x HD6970 and they run ok, highest temp ~76 C, and the fans do run loud and fast approx at 80 % now in summer!
I run with one side open for the case else temp rises +7-8 C more.

What exact cards, brand and model do you have immune? Have you tried run them with case opened?

ive been trying to run a single 5870 and a single 6850 in a case together and I keep getting over heating problems. I do have a proper case with 5 fans and plenty of space between the cards, once they start operating at 79+ degrees celcius for extended time they start getting buggy, not sure what to do
