Lylie33, I think you need a little bit more to invest in the acquisition of basic knowledge or you can come in a situation to lose your coins in future. There are many tutorials how Electrum works, so invest some time and try to read them. If you have problem with language, first option is to use Google Translate so you can read it on your own language, or just try to find relevant information on your domestic language.

This is good link for start : http://docs.electrum.org/en/latest/

Let's keep it simple.
Obviously you created a new wallet and didn't restore the old one. That's why you can't access your funds.

As long as you have the 12 words, you are good and your funds are safe.
To restore your wallet, follow the steps as described here:

Should I go to File, New/Restore and enter the 12 word phrase?

Yes, create a new standard wallet and select 'I already have a seed'. Enter it and you will be asked to select the derivation path. Try selecting 'legacy (p2pkh)' and you should see your balance after a moment. If not, create a new wallet once again, enter the words and then select 'native SegWit (p2wpkh)' instead.

On this computer I did not have a wallet nor the app, but I could open the new wallet with my previous password.

I checked a number of the addresses, both "receiving" and "Change" with no values returned.

All addresses start with '1' (not sure what it was previously)

Should I go to File, New/Restore and enter the 12 word phrase?

Ok step by step
Downloaded App 3.3.8
Entered password
Do have a 12 word phrase, was not asked to enter it
Only have one wallet (default, no extension)
Entries under Addresses
All start with '1'

So, you already had electrum installed on this computer, right ? Do you remember whether the addresses also started with 1.. ?
The password you entered was the password to open your default_wallet ?

The good thing is, as long as you have your 12 words, your coins are safe.

You might still try to check one of your first addresses in a block explorer (e.g. https://live.blockcypher.com/btc/), whether it has a balance or transaction history.

3.  I did not import my wallet, I downloaded the new version - where do I go to sync?

When you created your wallet for the first time, you were given a mnemonic phrase (12 words) which you were supposed to write down. These words can be used to recover your wallet. While creating a new wallet, select 'I already have a seed' and enter them. If you lost them then you won't be able to recover your coins unless you have a copy of your wallet file.

I assume you already had an electrum wallet and downloaded a new version now, right ?
Do you see 'addresses' in your new wallet (e.g. go to the addresses tab). What do these start with (1.. 3.. or bc1.. ) ?

Maybe you have multiple wallet files ? Go to file -> open and look whether there are multiple files (without extension). The default wallet is called default_wallet.
If you know which address should contain some balance, visit https://live.blockcypher.com/btc/ and enter your address in the search bar. Do you see any balance / transactions there ?

Or didn't you have electrum installed on your computer at all ? How did you create the wallet then ? What exact steps, did you restore it by entering 12 words ? Or did you create a new wallet ?
Do you have your backup phrase (12 words) ?

IF you have a new mac, and downloaded electrum again, you either had to move your wallet files, or restore your wallet from the seed phrase. If you just downloaded electrum on a new system and ran electrum for the first time, electrum will probably have generated a brand new wallet (just an educated guess).

  • Just go to View => Show addresses
  • A new Addresses-tab should appear, open it...
  • right click the first address => copy address (or go straight to "view on block explorer", the downside to this method is that you'll be more or less bound to the block explorer that's defined in your general preferences)
  • If you copied the address instead of directly going to "view on block explorer" open your web browser, either search for "bitcoin block explorer", or just surf to blockchain.info or blockexplorer.com, paste the copied address and search
  • repeat for the next couple of addresses
  • maybe try a different online bockexplorer just to be sure

If no block explorer finds any history for the first couple of addresses, it's RELATIVELY safe to assume you just created an empty wallet...

My coins do not reflect in my wallet.  Can you please assist?

Do you have the same addresses as before? Do they start with the same number or letter (1, 3 or bc1)? It sounds like you either created a new wallet and not entered your mnemonic phrase (12 words) or you selected a wrong derivation path while importing your wallet.

Is it only the balance or can't you see the transactions history either? Please check the bottom right of your wallet, if the color is red, try connecting to another server.

Hi

I got a new Mac and dowloaded the new wallet from your site.  My coins do not reflect in my wallet.  Can you please assist? PS I am not very tech savvy, so if you can keep it simple, please?

Thank you
Check if your coins show up on a block explorer online and if your wallet is fully synched, especially if u recently transfered coins.
