Ethereum will one day nid 8GB. Since it is not even possible to mine ETH with a 2GB gpu as of last Nov. At this rate, I tink 4GB limit will be arriving pretty soon. On top of that, 8GB gpu are usually quicker than 4GB since they are clocked higher. Also, u will be future proofing ur machine if u get the 8gb gpu.

I was still mining ETH on some 2GB cards into late Febuary or early March.

On the other hand, the "exceed 4GB limit" will probably never happen on ETH (it should eventually on ETC) as ETH is supposed to be going Proof of Stake long before the DAG file gets that big.

For gaming, 4GB works just fine on my 1440p monitor running Ashes. More and faster RAM (8GB cards seem to always have 8Ghs ram, 4GB usually has 7 and sometimes 6.6) wouldn't hurt for a future-proofing gamer though.

And no, most 4GB memory will NOT clock to 8Ghs - a lot if it does very good to get to 7.5

Yes, but this isn't a gaming forum. It's mining.
So you can choose if you want faster ROI or slower.

I think you should go for the 8gb ones. There are already some new algos what need 8gb cards. Also the 8gb is faster and has a better resale value.

Out of curiosity, which algos need 8gb?

That is complte bullshit. The 8GB limit will arrive for Eth in about mid 2019. Also you can clock the 4gb version just as high as the 8gb one. So it's completely pointless to pay 50USD more for a 8GB one. Even looking at the resale value, it's not worth it. In 1-2 years you'll get maybe 10USD more for your 8Gb one than a 4GB one.

Well, the 8GB gpu is also good if the TS decides to game at a 1440p resolution monitor. Having more VRAM does not hurt especially in this age and time. The more VRAM the merrier. Besides, 50USD more for double the VRAM does not sound like a bad deal.

Thanks everyone for the answers.

About that prediction that we will need more than 4GB in mid 2019, how you made that calculation/guess?

Hi..i want to know your point of view about when cards with 4GB of ram will be useless for mining as today are the ones with 2GB.

It's good idea to pay an extra today (may 2017) for catch the 8GB models? The cards will burn before the dag reach the 4GB line and will be a lost investment?

Mostly i'm focused in mine ethereum and dash, opinions are welcome.
You can calculate you roi according to your electricity price , after that it will be clear for you which one is better if you have very low electricity price then 4gb is the best and you will get fast roi and resell for good price , if you have expensive electricity then run in the safe side with the 8gb versions because your roi will take a bit longer just my opinion

The difference mainly applies to Ethereum mining. However the 8GB card do have a higher memory clock speed (2000 vs 1750 MHz) and slightly better performance, so IMO the ~$50 price difference between the two is worth it if you want to future proof and maximize resale value. Dash mining is ASIC only at this point and currently not profitable to mine with GPU's.

You sound like a pedal to the metal run the cards hot and hard.

If that is how you mine  get the 4gb.

If you mine at 80 %  and just do a cruisin along style of mining the cards will last  so get 8gb
