I just put mine on a bunch of shelves on a rack. Each rig ends up taking up 6U, but it's open air, and I can fit 5 GPUs per rig. Best part? It's cheap.

Would be great to be able to do this, however due to restrictions in the datacenter I need to keep things in cases (i.e. electrical codes). Also, with hot/cold aisles and 12-24 GPUs per rack, it needs significant airflow over the cards to keep them cool.

I am currently running them open air.  I tried them in a rig but the 2nd card is too close to the 3rd card and gets throttled to 700 kh/s, even with max fan speed.  This was without the lid, when I close the lid it throttles a lot and temperatures raise 5-8 C.

Are you running the same motherboard? Do they all physically fit in case?

Regarding the heat issue, I have the same thing now in a desktop case. In the 4u case I plan on putting a very high airflow (200CFM) fan directly on card 2&3.

Do you have any photos by any chance?

Has anyone had any experience setting up a 4U rack case with an ASRock 990FX EXTREME3 and 3 x R9 290s?

Using desktop cases now, but airflow isn't very good and these are being installed in racks anyway so rack cases may be more suitable.  I'm concerned I won't be able to fit all 3 of the R9 290s with the PCI-E config of the ASRock mobo.
