well, i'm still planning on overcloking the gpu's, so with that in mind the second power supply is not a bad idea (btw electricity is a fixed amount included in the rent, so not too concerned with energy efficiency)

Alright so i had some more help outside, just for future reference i'll describe what was wrong, and what solved it.
First off, the power supplly was indeed insufficient, so i'm adding a 2nd one, this should solve the cards failing.
Besides that, i had a monitor hooked up to internal graphics, this seemed to cause problems, so instead i'm now using a gpu for the display, which made one more card work.
With that fixed i can manage to get all 6 cards working!

You're right PSU is is too low yeah but if undervolt your GPUs to 850mV it should work without another PSU.

85W x 6 GPUs = 510W which is fine. Give that a go without an additional PSU and you may save some pennies.

So i had 5 gpu's working and mining, when after about 30 min, windows shut down with a blue screen stating: Windows encountered a problem.
After reboot it will autostart mining, but it only recognizes 2 gpu's now.
I'm running windows 10
Aorus z370 motherboard
intel i3 processor
250gb ssd
6x AMD Radeon RX-580 (1 wasn't working anyway)
Corsair 1100 watt psu

I seemed to have this problem before, but i wasn't there to monitor it, i was able to fix it, but then while monitoring it it happened again.

with PSU 1100w for RX type, that's enough.

Is your Bios vga already modified? If it has been modified, try to use the application "atikmdag-patcher". so that the GPU has been modified its BIOS can be read.

I had the same issue last week... has there been a windows update on your rig recently? Sometimes updates drives and if your card is modded will need to run Pixel patcher again.
Maybe check in Bios that cards are detected there - will help determine if its a Hardware issue, card, riser, cable or software issue..

To resole my issue i could see the cards are detected in Bios, so i ran DDU, shutdown, made sure all power drained from system (On off button few times with no cable connected) - might be overkill might not?
Restarted reinstalled drivers, run Pixel patcher reboot and everything was ok...

try disconnect temporary 1 gpu, by this way you can check power of your PSU.
If rig working fine with 4 gpu then replace supply with more power

you can try to reset CMOS, move RAM to Dimm 1 or Dimm 2, move power from PSU to another USB Riser (detect if Riser is broken) and make sure you using latest driver AMD.

I had similar problem in another mother board. I need to turn off the power supply and restart again. See the 5 GPU again.

you can check a cable PSU and USB Riser. but if I calculate the Power Consumption needed, your PSU not enough and lack power. Rx580 has TDP 185W x 6 = 1110W. try to using PSU 1200W or more.
