Nice setup.. have a small 120 GPU setup that i had running in a spare bedroom.. I was venting hot air out via a maxair 24 inch fan..  HOA required i move my rigs to an area where they could not be heard.. Have moved it to the garage for now.. Heat is my biggest problem.. cant drill holes in the walls..

Planning on opening a door from the garage partially and making an additional screen door and mounting an exhaust on it.. how loud are the QuietCool AFG PRO-3.0 Attic Gable Fan Model fans (Red ones)

How many have you or others had to use ?

Also most of the PSU are the HP Server PSU.. they are super efficient, each 1200watt (@220V or 900W @110V) is powering 4 gpus (Rx570/ Rx580) as long as ambient temp is under 87F they work great.. any higher the PSU are like jet engines ! i have just 24 of these and they are the main reason for all of the noise Sad

... any idea how to isolate or reduce the noise.. dont want to buy new PSUs..

Ugh so jealous. My shitty garage farm with ~100 GPUs looks like a joke next to this.

Oh, Come on! 100 GPUs is no joke!
Yeah but they look like a joke. You've got a nice clean pro setup. I have a disaster of wires, mismatching shelves, and hardware!

Nice, but this topic was 8 months ago, when mining was very profitable, how about today?
Which video cards, which coins and how many profit?
How much you pay for kWh?

Im curious because my rig with 8x RX470/570 give me only $8 per day and i have very expensive electricity, im thinking if is better to sell all my rig.

just wanted to thank this thread. Setup my shed in january and this summer has been great. no heat in my house and miners hover at 74c max for the worst gpu's.

Thanks.

Shed isn't perfect for sure, but it works. Looking into making some changes, updates when I have time. My studies keep me swamped. Tongue

I would suggest to invest in a small de-humidification unit, its worth the investment to protect your kit.

Look up some info and specs : https://www.munters.com

That's a pretty good idea for propping up the GPUs. Are you worried about unequal air flow over the GPUs that are at different heights in relation to the fans?

The top shelf is a bit warmer than the rest, but it really isnt an issue.

great project, i havent read the entire thread but what have you come up with for reducing moisture in the air and filtering

my garage is set up similar, although much smaller scale.. but i leave the back door open for fresh air intake and air pushes out through ridge cap in the roofing and soffit vents

I've not solved the humidity issue, but i foresee it being a huge problem. I have found corrosion on one GPU. This must be resolved ASAP!

I'm open to suggestions. Is there some large air blower that i can feed air into the shed that doubles as a dehumidifier or something? I need to set up some conditioning of the air.
hmm thats really fast

I run my gpus in the winter here in MN and im at around 30% humidity with half my rooftop exhaust fans turned on
If i turn on too many humidty drops further but I have 200 gpus and some asics , and ive never seen rust or mould.

Im confused as to why you humidity is so low, my gpus are in a garage as well

humidity is too high.

What's your plan for a power outage? Any UPS System?  Generator? Wait it out?

Wait it out, if i stop mining momentarily its fine. Plus, that RARELY happens. During Hurricane Harvey, my lights didnt even flicker.

What about a recycled air system with a dehumidifier. Or pull the air in and run several dehumifiers in the tubbing.

I have been neglecting the GPUs a bit lately, but I have time to resolve some issues now. I have tried different ways to mount the GPUs, and we have found the best simple way to prevent GPU sagging. Using the waste ends of the 1x4s and some binder clips the GPUs have better support.

This is like $12 for all those clips! Who needs to spend a bunch of money on GPU suports? Make 'em your self!

That is awesome! What model of power outlet strips are you using (look a bit like pack poles). Looks like the name could be TrippLite but I can't see any model info.

Thanks!

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812120338&cm_re=tripp_lite_30A_pdu-_-12-120-338-_-Product

For your next setup check out the cyberpower pdu's. The SNMP data is more detailed, and doesn't require an applet (and whacky browser settings) to control it. It has a clean web interface you can get to easily.

It outputs per-bank load so you can balance easier, vs the single reading from the tripplite. It some other data too that's neat to see (power consumed since startup, resettable), like this:

CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusLoad.1 = Gauge32: 158
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusLoad.2 = Gauge32: 81
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusLoad.3 = Gauge32: 77
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusVoltage.1 = INTEGER: 2378
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusVoltage.2 = INTEGER: 2378
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusVoltage.3 = INTEGER: 2378
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusActivePower.1 = INTEGER: 3630
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusActivePower.2 = INTEGER: 1863
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusActivePower.3 = INTEGER: 1767
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusApparentPower.1 = INTEGER: 3755
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusPowerFactor.1 = INTEGER: 96
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusEnergy.1 = INTEGER: 240261
CPS-MIB::ePDULoadStatusEnergyStartTime.1 = STRING: "2017/06/13 07:46:47"
CPS-MIB::ePDUStatusInputVoltage.0 = INTEGER: 2378
CPS-MIB::ePDUStatusInputFrequency.0 = INTEGER: 600
I have the same tripplite you posted, and also have one of these: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812220107&cm_re=CyberPower_PDU30MVHVT24FNET-_-12-220-107-_-Product

The only way I too see if a bank is overloaded on the tripplite is to wait until it pops the breaker for the bank (It happened to me... dual mining testing)

For my next build I'll use one of these instead, it has per-port on/off plus the good snmp output:https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA91J4344133&cm_re=CyberPower_PDU30SWHVT16FNET-_-9SIA91J4344133-_-Product

I'm tempted to add the environmental sensor to it too, there's a block of snmp data for that also.

I'm sure there's other PDU's way better than the cyberpower ones, but for the price and features, I like them.

Awesome mining cave btw Smiley

With all that wood you just need a little sawdust and a spark. I'll bring the marshmallows and wienies.

Don't Jinx it...the farm isnt paid off yet lol.

New video for the newbs out there. I'm still learning the ropes on video production, but I managed to record sound on my computer while recording video on the camcorder...no sync issues either!

Also, I failed to mention the dual ATX psu option and ofc, the cost benefits to running dual PSUs.

sweet jesus! how fast is your internet, and who's your provider?

also, where did you get the money for this, and how much was it?

You don't need fast internet for mining - I had a 3mb Time Warner line doing 10 1080 TI rigs with no latency issues at all. Now remoting into them... that's was a different issue

You cant do much with somones IP address, except DDOS them. But while you are at it can I have your address, when you are not home, and can you make your dog like me..

Also finished installing the fans for the Ant-Muffler today! You can see the custom "bookshelf" is in front of the fans as well. It just needs shelves and Antminers.

You're so fast with that impressive progress. Way to go BeerMan81! By the way, have you tested the noise level of this fan?
I'm consider to setup more 2 fans for my minin farm and I expect that fan's noise level should be less than 65dBA, but I checked around not much high speed fan could meet that low noise level.

beerman, what are you using on the outside to stop heavy run for pushing back in to the fan on the cold days.

those quiet cool fans are temp driven right? or i guess the antminers are just so hot it never turns off no matter the temperature?

No water goes in through the box fans because they are always exhausting. Yes, in the video you can see the fans running. The top seems to be running at a much higher speed than the one on the bottom.

From there the load is split between the home (still 100A) and shed (225A). The cable that feeds the shed is the same size as the one feeding the house (capable of 400A) but the panel they installed is only rated for a certain size. I may have him come back out once I have some ASICs pulling more juice to see what other options we have."

I am in Houston too and wanted to go from 200amp service to 400amps.  Centerpoint said I would have to pay for a new transformer (the current one serving 6 houses is 50 kVA), pay for the concrete pad that goes under it, pay them dig up a bunch of my neighbor driveways, their landscaping, repairs to same afterwards, etc.  The total cost was nearly $30k!!  did they charge you too?  how much?

They were certainly a headache to deal with that's for sure. Actually, I didn't interface with them much, they have a "consultant" that works in a certain area.

Specifically, we actually wanted a dedicated 400A feed to the shed. Initially the consultant was OK with it because the transformer could handle the load, however upon visual inspection, there were not enough spare terminations for another feed. So, said the best thing we could do is get a single 400A feed to the house which would replace the 100A.

So, what did we pay for? Well, I had to pay for the new trenching, all the cable, new meter can...etc...etc. The only thing I didn't pay for was the Centerpoint guys to install a new meter, and to do the final terminations on the transformer side. My electrician and his separate digging crew handled the rest. All in around $10k $13k or so.

So far so good. Those fans point at my house, so i don't think they can hear them. The antminers on the other hand, loud.

Worked on the network today. I have two new used switches, a Cisco SG200-48 and SF200-08, the first being deployed to the shed and the latter inside the house. When we buried the network cable, I installed 2 ethernet runs (just in case), but later it occurred to me I could have them both running simultaneously in a fail-over state. Shocked I tested the Link Aggregation (LAG) before deploying the 50-Port switch to the shed. Would you believe it was only $18 shipped?  Cheesy The fail-over seems to work great! only a few ms before the other link picks up.

The great thing about the new switch it that it has 2 GE ports, whereas the old one had none. Do you like my custom rack mount?

As you can see below, the old switch is quite full. All 24 ports are being used for 16 rigs, 1 uplink, 2 S9s, 2 L3+s, 2 SRRs, and 1 Desktop PC (Proxy Server). So, no room for the other 8 Antminers that are expected tomorrow!

I will have to relocate all the cables from the old switch to the new switch one at a time. After all that is done, the LAG will be live. Grin and the old switch can be removed.

What about the temperatures? You are getting lucky that the winter is comming Smiley
Are you planning to put all your hashing power on one coin?

During the summer, one rig was around 75C MAX, but the rest are pretty good. I think i know how to resolve it before next summer. All Ethereum rigs. Antiminers, still looking at the profitability, but will likely just have 9 S9s on Bitcoin (maybe some BCH too) and 6 L3+s on Litecoin.

Nicely done! Maybe i will try and build that kind of a "house" too. For now i have "special" mining room. The temperature is arround 16°C Smiley with 26 GPUs mining inside Smiley I know this is not 100+ GPUs, but for a start is ok :p

as a fellow houstonian, i've been following yours and yun's threads for a while. so during the summer, you guys just run it using fans, no a/c nothing? no issues with heat? all my miners all scattered all over my house right now and i'm a bit curious about the summer configuration. was thinking about setting up a small shed and put some fans in there.

i was a bit worried about houston summer heat being too much.

Heat is not an issue. At one point, we had rigs all around the house (to spread the load), and obviously the AC could not hold up (but we had to keep mining). It occurred to me to try to put a couple rigs in the garage (so the AC did not have to work too hard), and you know how hot that gets! I seem to remember the temp was like 110F (43C) or so when fully closed. We cracked the garage door, about 4 inches and put a couple box fans and a few cardboard boxes to funnel the air outside. Never had any issues at all.

Consider that a GPU will happily run around 70C (158F) without any issues. Cooling them is not an issue as long as you exhaust the heat.

Re-installed the insulation after the new studs were installed. All the baffles are mounted to the new studs equidistant to each other so the airflow is not constricted. They should be around 12 inches apart (after installing the foam padding). The order of installation of the plywood pieces seems pretty chaotic, but there is not much room to move around, we have to do things in a certain order.

When it is all done, you will not see any insulation, plywood, or studs as the whole area will have sound insulating foam to dampen the sound of 15 Antminers and 2 exhaust fans. Much more left to do, and S9 #2 is coming next week!

This makes me want to gut the building we have in my back yard we just put a new roof on and do this with less Miners because it's not as big an i may, i live in Maryland so the weather won't be like Texas in the summer, i lived  in Texas  for 2 years once, i have family near fort worth Texas, i could run it all 24/7 an not worry about noise any more in the house an one of my Neighbors told me he would help me remodel, if i do it .

What is stopping you? Come up with a cooling plan, make a sketch. Plan your power, then go! Show some pics.

Good work sir, very impressive indeed, but yun is still my fav Grin

Congratulations sir. You are living the crypto life. Are you an engineer/architect and did you design the shed yourself? I don't understand anything written on them but those blueprints look sick.

To add to what was previously asked, doesn't rain get in through the fans? Or are the fans that strong it simply blows all the rain away?

what about insects crawling from underneath the ground?
what about when it rains?
it is pretty sick setup and everything looks great

This is a minor issue, but I have plans to put some screens underneath the grading to filter the air. Also, going to put some chicken wire or something around the border of the shed to prevent any critters from getting under there.

Rain is not an issue, we survived Hurricane Harvey just fine! However, I was a bit worried and dismantled the rigs on the bottom shelves as a precaution. That was stressful!

No water goes in the fans. Since they are constantly blowing out, 99.9% of the rain that might bead up is blown away. I am not an engineer, but that is the plan. I have been going to school for part-time for a couple years, and thanks to the crypto-life and the good ol' unemployment office, I am able to survive and attend classes full-time. My father has been a chemical engineer for over 40 years, and I used to work for an engineering firm for 9 years before getting laid off this past May. So, designing the process for the mining shed was a fun engineering challenge that we are accustomed to.

We designed the basic dimensions of the shed, but left it up to the builders to construct it. We planned for the box fans, and grating which is commonly used in oil refineries and offshore oil rigs etc., but left it up to the builders to construct it.

Those plans are mostly my Dad's scribbles, but are actually to scale!

The old man and I collaborated and came up a plan to keep the S9s and L3+s quiet. The first S9 arrived and is in the shed already, but not in a permanent location. Wow, i knew they were loud, but i did not expect to be able to hear them in the house. Angry I can't imagine what 15-16 will sound like.

Air will continue to be sucked from the underside of the shed. We are building an "AntMuffler" © in the unused half of the shed. What we have is an air inlet on the north side (right side in the drawing) of the shed near the electrical panel. There are 3 baffles on the intake of the fans and 3 on the discharge side. Each baffle will be made of 3/4" plywood with 2" of industrial soundproof foam. This should ensure that we can't hear the trains whistle. I don't want the neighbors to complain Shocked

The baffles are positioned such that it will be very difficult for sound to escape. Air will be discharged on the South side. The fans should be more than able to keep up with the 15 Antminers.  If not, we have room for a third. Smiley

First trip to home depot, a batch of 2x4s.

We cleared out all the stuff.

Some modifications to the grating need to be made. The design for quiet box is a little too wide and would need to be built on top of the grating. This would block some air flow and make the grating impossible to remove. I still want to be able to remove them if needed. A compromise was made. So we are cutting away three sections to install some 2x4 mounts.

Last pic for today. You can see the mounted elevated 2x4 which allows the grating to be slid in and out.

What you have in actuality is a giant computer case in your backyard.  The airflow through the floor grating is brilliant.  When time permits, you should set up a desk, chair and monitor and take a pic next to the world's biggest home (yard) computer.

I think I looked at every picture in his threads, I need to buy that man a beer one day as the inspiration for this project was largely due to his posts. We were debating on going with a rental space, but we figured that we would save money in the long term by building in my backyard. It was around 13k for the elec and trenching and 3k for the shed. At 1200/mo rent for a place nearby, the shed would pay for itself in a year (not to mention the tax incentives I have been pondering).

A rental space is likely in the future as we grow. The shed is a mere stepping stone!

I am surprised the neighbors don't complain about the noise, or have they?
Don't give out the info where you live or brag to much about it.
I would also setup a security service on this.

Shed was HoA approved, and no complaints. I have been wondering about insurance, that is a great idea!

Awesome hut, what power supply line do you have feeding the shed ?

This was the real issue! Previously, we had 100A service to the house. We wanted dedicated 400A service to the shed along with a new meter. However, the transformer in the neighbor's yard did not have enough connections. We went back and forth with Centerpoint Energy and the only thing we could get was as follows:

New underground 400A service from the Transformer to the house, terminated to a new 320A meter can (80% load). From there the load is split between the home (still 100A) and shed (225A). The cable that feeds the shed is the same size as the one feeding the house (capable of 400A) but the panel they installed is only rated for a certain size. I may have him come back out once I have some ASICs pulling more juice to see what other options we have.

Back of the shed.

The trench, which the signs of the digging have all but disappeared.

You may not be able to tell, but that is 20 inches down.

The ethernet conduit (2 runs of shielded gigabit).

The power distribution. The center panel is the original 100A panel.

The cable

I didn't think the metal carport t hing would work with the small backyard.  Insulation and airflow will be the best solution.  If heat does become an issue you can always underclock your cards on hot days if need be.  Being vigilant is key.  Seriously though, nice job!

Nice garden's hut.
Thanks for sharing

But how do you protect it from thieves ?

You got approx 20k$ in it, which can be stolen in few minutes.

Perhaps you live in a nice country but in mine, even 10$ garden sculptures could be stolen !

Nice setup! Could you please share more about the ventilation and cooling plan!

Sure: Here is the vision. Since the center of the shed is open (industrial steel grating), air goes where the fan exhausts it. So, first, need better fans to go exhaust the heat generated by s9s and L3+s, which in turn blows outside. Just like on the Eth rigs side, but less dense of course.

If we are happy with the fans, I will replace the fans in the Rig side of shed. See the ghetto pic:

celing exhuast fans 1500  cfm x 3 or wall mounted take care of all your heat
exhaust issues, I have six in my build and with 150gpus i only have to turn on one

Unfortunately my HOA has strict rules about the height of sheds, must be no more than 8 feet above grade, and I am right there.

  I am in awe. Can you put a metal roof/siding, spaced out from the structure, to shield it from the sun?  Kind of like a pre-fab carport?  It would look like shit but it would keep the sun off your shed.

Ha ha! OMG no... Shocked I just need to put the insulation on that part and change fans...too busy now with classes, and the temp outside has dropped. So, during Thanksgiving break, I have a lot of shit to do! Trying to prepare now.

Only code violation I see is the romex is not run in the studs and does not have conduit. I also believe the outlet right by the panel is required to be a GFCI.

But it looks good to me

Oh, i'm sure its fine in the U.S. I'm envious as we would have to get an electrician at about $120 per hour + material to wire that up for electrical and data, then bury the conduit between house and shed. Has to be 700mm down in orange conduit I believe.

All the electrical work was done by a master electrician. The Ethernet cables were run by me, zip ties and all  Cool

You guys are so lucky.

This would get shut down in Australia for so many electrical violations it wouldn't be funny, not to mention the 31c per Kw cost means its uneconomical

Hmm looks legit with no blatant code violations to me there.  Your electrical is stupid high at 31c .  I pay 7 cents in texas.

Do yourself a favor.  Dump those crap fans and buy 2-3 of these.  All I use and I run 30gh at 3 locations.  Also filter your inbound air if you want to keep your stuff somewhat clean, if not just air blow it our every couple weeks.  For sure add netting or screen on the bottom air intake as critters will hose you bad.

Our regulations are stupid. We cant even run data cables in our own roof space, has to be installed by a licenced contractor.

Looks a very nice setup, I feel with the ventilation, you need the cool air coming in from bottom and warm air venting from top outwards, would be more efficient and cooler this way. Just put some fans lower than the others, at bottom, on opposite side, if possible.

Here you can see the other side of the shed is virgin, untouched! We need to poke some holes in there.  Wink

We have a blank slate in which to design! The wiring is ready to go. We just need to add some fans before the ASICs show up around Thanksgiving! We have 4 coming this month, and 4 more coming in December.

You can see the the studs are placed 20" apart. Originally we we planning on putting cheapo box fans there for more ETH rigs, but plans have changed. The cheopo fans are good enough for rigs, but not the Antminers.

So, I would appreciate any suggestions!

This summer we built a shed for our mining GPUs. We hit a major milestone of filling it up 50% full of 192 AMD GPUs in September sometime. We have since ordered some S9s, and L3+s, which are coming at the end of November. So our plan for the unused section of the shed are to fill with it ASICs until we reach our power limit, adding capacity every month.

Here you can see the wall of 7 cheap box fans. Surprisingly, this was sufficient enough to keep the rigs cooled during this summer in the Houston heat. However, the section on the right gets a lot more sun (and i never finished insulating that part) and is much hotter than the rest. My concerns are for the incoming ASICs.

Here is the massive wall of rigs! Pretty sick right?! Grin
