Topic: 5830 missing heatpipe. Is it safe? (Read 1271 times)
Sometimes I see cards with 2 missing pipes. I think so it's manufacturer's thing.

The raw materials might be cheap, but copper heatpipes are actually fairly expensive.
Anyways my 5830 only has 3 heatpipes so you should be ok as long as that missing heatpipe isn't one of the ones touching the core.
Not that expensive, considering you can regularly buy a Coolermaster Hyper 212 for $20 shipped from Newegg with four much longer heatpipes, and that includes all the fins, the backplates, mounting hardware, fan, box, and a tube of goop, plus markup for all involved.
I would be surprised if the whole heatsink on that card cost the manufacturer much more than $5.

Basically got this un-used diamond 5830. It's in pristine condition, never removed from the anti static bag except for one substantial flaw. It's missing a heatpipe. Is it safe to plug in to a computer, and if so, is it safe to mine on?
Not missing a heatpipe necessarily, manufacturers often use the same HS on multiple cards. For example, I have a Powercolor 6950, 2 heatpipes, and I have some 6970's which look exactly the same, however the 6970's have 4 heatpipes. Comparing the two, you see there are 2 spots for the heatpipes to go, 6950 empty, 6970's full.
yes. It will just be a little worse at dissipating heat. try to make it and "end" card on either end of your mobo or use an pcie extender. With a "normal" mining environment where you keep a decent temperature you wont have a problem
