I think it would be wise to wait for the high-end 7000 series cards to come out.By that time you should see eBay flooded with cheap 5970's.

When do the 7000s come out?

I am so tempted, but Newegg charges tax in my state and I am completely broke (except for BTC) at the moment.  I wouldn't be getting it for mining, but actually for gaming.

With the 5970 in my HTPC-turned-homebrew-game-console and my 2 6950s in my main desktop, I think I'd be set for a long time.  Plus I would have all the mining hardware I'd need when the price of BTC shoots back up.

Is this like a one-off deal or can these be found for a similar price at other places/times?

What kind of PSU do you guys think would be necessary to power a Q9550, a 5970, and 4 hard drives?
