This is a sad news for everyone. In this world filled with bad people, the more you're becoming successful the more your life is at risk. But we don't know the real reason about the abduction and killing. If it's only about money and ransom or there's a hatred towards the victim. But I hope his family will get the justice he deserves.

Even the $1-million ransom paid by William Sean Creighton's wife to the kidnappers was to no avail.

After having being reported missing for almost a year, the founder of 5Dimes sportsbook was found dead in Costa Rica, the local police confirmed.

What a sad news, even when they were given a part of what they claim they wanted they still killed their victim, this makes me think that there is a possibility that they were not after the money and they wanted to do this from the beginning, and while we know that bitcoin had nothing to do with this since the kidnappers could have asked for fiat instead, it is likely that the media will try to spin this as evidence that bitcoin allows criminals to get away with their crimes when that is not the case since kidnapping existed before bitcoin.

I don't know about the case much, but seeing on face-value, it's really sad. These types of cases are the reason why one should be anonymous especially when they have something hugely valuable in possession or have tight security measures. Also, a reason why many online casino owners are sceptical about revealing their identity when their sites become too popular, and if they don't reveal then the players shout "non-transparent" site even without thinking that it might endanger the owner's life!

It's strange enough that someone like him is easily kidnapped, wouldn't this be a conspiracy?. I think people who are involved in gambling business will more careful to expressing themselves outside or atleast he have bodyguard who always guard him, People would prefer to be anonymous because this concerns their personal safety specially in the gambling business.

It is difficult to remain anonymous specially when you have a business like he had a sportsbook site. Many people would have known him personally and he cannot afford to do gambling betting while being remain anonymous. The investigation can only tell what was the real reason behind this kidnap & murder and I hope those criminals should be caught and hanged.

Normally whenever I read such news my first instinct tells me it’s an insider person’s job, because it’s impossible execute it without their help. As far as I know many gambling owners never share their real photos because of privacy issues, it’s unfortunate that his real information was leaked out and that led to his death. @virasog these kind of murders are executed by professional killers, and it’s impossible to find them but I too hope his killers are arrested.

We never know there will be an investigation we'll know if they released the results of the investigation, it could be an act of revenge or a conspiracy or just kidnapping, but this is a call for gambling operators to beef up their security whenever they are going to visit other countries.
Well, if it is indeed an assassination then do you think that there won't be an action by the killer to cover up the result of investigation to escape from it?. Let's wait then for the result of investigation if what really is the intention behind this tragedy. It seems to me that it is not just a kidnapping since the person/people behind the abduction is asking for $1m worth of bitcoin.
It was $5M worth of Bitcoin actually and the wife just gave $1M to the kidnappers. I wonder what happen to the rest of the story since his wife just gave a million dollar worth of Bitcoin. That must be the reason why kidnappers never releases her husband.

More and more news about of killing people who owns a lot of crypto these days. Shouldn't whales and gambling owners feel the danger on their life trusting the wrong person? It seems that Bitcoin is now being used as a way of payment for kidnapping.
Its too obvious on whats the main motive of crime which is robbery and it do end up to be murdered. This is quite common
to see such scenario if theres someone being hostage up and the demands werent met not only that where suspects will most
likely kill up their victim rather than on releasing them as said by some it is much more wiser to leave up no trace than to release it all along.
They are just giving a way on how they would be get caught by the authorities.
They can't just rob someone when their money is not literally physical since the kidnappers are asking money in Bitcoin and not just a money transferred to the kidnappers bank account. Actually, Bitcoin has been used before in any criminal activities because of its anonymity and the advantage of it over the banks.
It never been mentioned that they do ask out Fiat. We've known that they would use up Bitcoin for it not to be traceable and they do know that
their hostage is a multi-millionaire and even they had been given by $1M they didnt tend to release it because they do want something more than that.
We know on whats the reputation of Bitcoin when it comes to crimes like this and sadly its being dragged down once again and do looks bad into other eyes
specially to those who werent aware on bitcoins existence ever.

That was a great loose to the family and the gambling industry. Going through the story, I can deduce some reasons which could have possibly lead to his death by those kidnappers. Firstly, they paid the kidnappers unreasonable amount of money they actually demanded from them ( $5m to $1m) which was far bellow the kidnappers demands. Greediness on the part of the family maybe also contribute because, as the owner of a gambling platform you will be seen as a multi millionaire. Secondly, close friends to the victim are the ones that actually carried out the kidnapped and demand ransom. I have leant a lesson, never give kidnappers one third of what they demand, in my country were there is higher rate of kidnapping, you dare not pay one third of what they demand ( ransom ). The gambling industry have just lost another potential investor.

very concerned about this news,
hopefully, his wife patiently accepts this fact.

More and more crimes in this regard was very common in the gambling world. When people know about a person having a large sum of funds, automatically the person will be under surveillance. This surveillance will be by thieves as well as governments. From my view this crime case will go hidden soon.
greed and the desire to get rich quickly is the root of all evil,
if this case is hidden then the local government and police will certainly be involved,
I hope in the future, the owners of crypto gambling sites don't expose themselves to the public.

That's horrible,but I have to ask something.
Why is this topic in the Gambling discussion forum?Only because this guy was founder of a srortsbook website?Such topics don't belong to this sub-forum.You,or some moderator should move them to a more suitable forum.I've never heard anything about the 5Dimes platform or Sean Creighton, but this is truly awful.

Which other place can we place this topic other than gambling discussion ?
I think this is the right place for this discussion as people are discussing about the owner of the gambling site and the how it can impact the site.

Sad news. I do know that 5Dimes is one of the most popular gambling sites out there that fortunately accepts BTC and I never had any issues gambling on their site.I am guessing that the owners of other popular gambling sites are buffing their security now.

This makes crypto even more essential in our day to day lives where privacy can help save lives. The sooner the world governments who stand against BTC realize this, the better. 1 year to find the body is way too much time though.

With the death of the owner of 5Dimes , there would nothing be changed in the site and it will continue to run. Also remember that he was missing for the past few months, which does means that the gambling site has been running by some other person and his death will have no impact on the gambling site.

They demanded 5 Million dollar from his wife but she only paid 1 million dollar to the kidnappers. Maybe the kidnappers were not satisfied with the amount and they finally killed him after he was being missing for an year or so.
He was an amercian book maker and made a lot of money through betting and gambling.

We don't know what the real reason behind and why the wife only pay $1M instead of paying the full amount for the safety of his husband. The case of this incident only shown that being recognized to have a huge amount of money will lead you to risk your life. It's best if possible to keep being anonymous and keep your identity secret especially online.

5M dollar is a big amount and maybe his wife and family did not have that much amount to give to them to rescue her husband.
I think the killers had some other intentions and not only to get the money.  1M dollar should have been enough for them but these rich people have lot of enemies around them and also many people are jealous from their fame and money.

This is one of the risks of running an online gambling site, they thought you have millions in your coffer it could be an act of revenge because people are losing in that gambling site, or you may be right the criminals are exposed and afraid that they will use his money to catch them, this is one of the big reasons why they have no choice but to kill their victims.

1m usd is already a pretty huge amount of sums but why they dont accept that offer and insist to kill thier hostage ? hmmm , i think those kidnappers dont really want money or they are already rich  but i think they only hated the guy because i think his websites is a competitor to them  . like on other business this act also happen due to insecurities   .   or maybe the guy has a loan to these kidnappers  or to thier big boss and he cant pay it or he didnt pay it on time  so he will take his life in exchange  .

But this TONY had a bad reputation as it is so sadly we can assume it was going to happen to him at some point if he made the wrong people mad

No what I am trying to say is maybe if they just paid up front the full 5$ million then may be they would have let him go
We need some more details why they only paid 20% of the ransom they asked when these 5 DIMES has so much $$$

Definitely a sad story to read, just goes to show that paying a ransom doesn't always go to plan, since most criminals realize that once they let their victim go they'll stand a higher chance of being caught than if they just kill them—sucks.

That must be why the police and governments of most countries refuse to negotiate with terrorists and hostage takers, since this is the kind of sh*t that can happen.
Wise thing to be done if we do try to think thoroughly.Better to kill the hostage and leave no trace than to let it go which would increase the chance for them to get caught.
Perhaps he really knows the identity of his kidnappers that's why he didn't gave him the chance to escape even if the $1 Million ransom money has been paid through bitcoin. They can easily hide and move around the money without a trace.

This is why we do commonly see hostage takings do end up on this way yet they don't have any choice if they don't like for themselves to get caught. They might able to
get away with authorities but their conscience will haunt them forever.
Privacy and security. He should have hire a body guard or really take care of himself not roaming a country which he is not accustomed to. Yeah, I do hope that the authorities (with the aid of US government (I'm assuming that they will investigate this since a US citizen is involved) will caught the perpetuators of this senseless killings.
If you are a businessman which holds or do have millions of net worth then its just normal to think regarding on your own safety.

Majority of them do neglect into those basic things without even realizing that danger is just lurking in the shadows and just waiting up for them to strike once
they do had the opportunity but sadly people are way too confident in terms of their own security. If I do have the money just like them then hiring personal guards would be a dime.

This is a very strange story, according to the article in January of this year police arrested 12 people suspected of being involved in the abduction, but only now that they found their body? The police had plenty of time to interrogate the 12 suspects and in all that time would be more than enough for at least some of those 12 suspects to confess where they hid the body. but only now that they found the body? this is very strange

I feel bad for them... Today, a lot of crimes are occurring around the world just for money. With his case, he became vulnerable for such crime because he's influential and has a lot of money. That's what criminals want, they're capable of doing anything for money. We cannot change what happened, but this would serve as a lesson to everyone as well, not to disclose every information about you. And always keep in private.
Well, just because there were always greed and lazy people out there. They want quick money and their target are those rich and having business people and it means the most influential and has a lot of money. But the worst thing is they use bitcoin in committing crimes which is give a bad effect on it. Well, truly it just serves as a lesson to those who have the owner of an online/offline gambling site that must do your security first. Indeed, Satoshi Nakamoto was right, be remain anonymously and you will be fine.

This is how risky for a popular gambling operator to travel to a place he is not familiar, he should employ a lot of bodyguards since he has a lot of  money, this is a warning to all gambling operator, they will not want to identify their real identity to any popular gambling site, for fear that this crime will also happen to them.
the criminals are very cruel they should have let him since he pays $1 million already, this is already a big amount in their currency.

The extortion cases with BTCitcoin is becoming a popular theme and we need more privacy if you are big shot or a business owner in this platform as criminals are targeting them for easy money and it is a worrying scene as i have seen many similar cases in the past and now the owner was murdered even after paying the ransom of one million dollars. The lessons learned after seeing all these cases are never to flaunt your wealth without any private security with you.

This is not entirely gambling-related but rather a concern worthy of being discussed in the Bitcoin Discussiom boards.

Yep, this is somewhat complex. If you run a business and nobody knows who you are, then the chance of you being a scammer is higher. On the other hand, if you publish who you are, things like kidnapping might happen quite often.

It's a dilemma if people thought you're the one who holds the money of the business. It's even more dangerous if the country you live in can't protect you that much. If this is the condition, then staying low might be a better choice while you'll need to use an escrow or something like that for your business (if you want to run it and not use it to scam people).

One of the many reasons why privacy is still a very important aspect nowadays in this world full of famewhores and wannabes. Who knows what the guy endured for a year before getting killed, and even with the ransom paid in full, they still killed him. It's really hard to make a footing in the crypto world and establish your business. Getting known publicly is a double-edged sword, and Creighton definitely suffered at the sharper end of it.

This is not entirely gambling-related but rather a concern worthy of being discussed in the Bitcoin Discussiom boards.

They are asking $5 million and they gave them $1 million, this could be the reason why they murder him, they want to extract more millions knowing their hostage is a multi-millionaire, this is one big reason why gambling operators chooses to run their gambling site without giving their real name as the owner.
So, in this case, we could not blame gambling operators here that being hide their real identity. They want of being anonymous because of they afraid to show their identity in public for the reason that they must have security. Sad to know this news and this could be alarming to those owners of gambling site who run by not hiding their real identity. But the saddest thing is that bitcoin is very well known to use payment in crimes such as killing, ransom or even buying drugs. I hope someday it will be known to donate in churches and charity program-related

We can only wonder at this point what would have happened if the full 5$ million ransom was paid in BITCOIN he still may be here today
But this TONY had a bad reputation as it is so sadly we can assume it was going to happen to him at some point if he made the wrong people mad

Yeah, it's sad when you hear news like. It looks like criminals are now targeting personalities in the gambling world. Even here in my country, Chinese involved in gambling are being kidnap and ask for a huge ransom because they know that the families are rich and willing to pay that ransom money. For sure this sad news will send shockwakes to all gambling related activities around the globe, specially that the victim here in a US citizen. And what makes this incident very sad is that the it was set up by someone close to him.

If they had just grant those ransom money in complete amount then there might be a possibility for him to be released up and might not able to get murdered but still on 50-50 chances yet we wouldnt know if they would ask out even more after that knowing criminal minds are too greedy and as you said they know that their hostage or victim is a multi-millionaire and would really be desperate to extract money as much as they can.Its really sad to hear out these kind of stories where people get hostaged or kidnapped then later on been murdered due to their reputation. Its really hard to publicize your identity if you do involved yourself into business platforms.Everything does need transparency but as said above this is some sort of double edge sword.

Even the $1-million ransom paid by William Sean Creighton's wife to the kidnappers was to no avail.

After having being reported missing for almost a year, the founder of 5Dimes sportsbook was found dead in Costa Rica, the local police confirmed.

This is really heartbreaking to lose a loved ones in the midst of other challenges of life. While some might argue that for a founder in the gambling world which is known to be a notorious venture there is bound to be stepping on stones and rubbing shoulders with gangs but at the same time keeping him for a year and collection of over ransom is more than enough for him to be have been made to pay for whatever offence he might have committed to his abductors.

This is another blow to the entire gambling industry and at the same time taint the crypto world because after ransom was collected in bitcoin, there is still snuffing out of life. Not to make claims though, the founder might be sick and the lack of access to medical care might have been responsible for the death other than the kidnappers themselves but all of that no longer matter again.

That is why a public person must always be worried about his privacy on the internet. Nobody should be able to learn in the internet in which country that guy lived.

Poor guy, he was 1 year with kidnappers.

More than a dozen of people were involved in his kidnapping. Certainly not amatours. Sadly, even after receiving 1 million they still kept him and killed him. WTF.

Early the next morning, Creighton’s relatives received a $5 million ransom demand. A $1 million ransom was ultimately paid in bitcoin, authorities said.

In January, a dozen people believed to have been involved in Creighton’s kidnapping were arrested during raids in Costa Rica and Spain, investigators said at the time.

Certainly all public people who are known to be big BTC holders should follow very strict steps to protect their privacy, because they are a target. Jameson Loop made a very strict guide about it. It is costy, for certainly better than to expose yourself like that and risking being kidnapped or whatever.

Before we begin, I want to be clear that many of the techniques come at a cost. I had to fill out hundreds of pages of paperwork, spend around $30,000 in legal/banking/service fees, and endure a four-month process in order to achieve my goals. I estimate annual recurring costs of over $15,000 for my extreme setup.

That's a bad news for the 5dimes gambler since the founder is dead unless the person or people behind 5dimes founder's abduction is taking control of the domain. If 5dimes is a one man person behind the gambling site then it's done by thieves for sure but if not then I think there might be someone from the team is behind the abduction (not that I accused someone, who knows what the real reason is).

More and more crimes in this regard was very common in the gambling world. When people know about a person having a large sum of funds, automatically the person will be under surveillance. This surveillance will be by thieves as well as governments. From my view this crime case will go hidden soon.
