All the more reason to avoid importing known private keys, the leeching will be automatic as soon as the transaction is broadcast.
If you just want to check out what address is associated with the private key (and whether there is any coin there), use the wallet info tab of http://bitaddress.org paste in the private key then plug the resulting address into the search box of http://blockchain.info
