Let's say I had $5k I'm willing to invest in crypto.
Where would you put this money if you were to invest today?

Eth, Neo, Waves?...or just throw everything at BTC?
you should go direct to BTC invest you money in bitcoin but all you money just 3k dollar invest in bitcoin its for short term and if you have experience of trade then go for trade in bitcoin because bitcoin have high volatility in price and i sure you will gain high profit in bitcoin and the remaining 2 k dollar invest in ETH and WAVES  for long term because these a;coin have bright future.

you could put like 20% in btc , rest in like 5 different altcoins but remember invest in technology !
And is not it better to split the budget for example etherum, bitcoin and waves depending on the faith in each of them? I think it's a good idea.

Buy one bitcoin and relax, what is the worst that can happen? Bitcoin has become a serious player, In the bus on my way home from work today, I overhead the conductor and an elderly passenger discussing it and wondering if to join the train. It may turn out to be a $5000 gamble in the long term, but in the next few weeks, you will definitely profit.

50% Btc because bitcoin is the best and nothing can cause it to change.
20% eth and ltc ,best for getting short term return.
Remaining you can play around by using that for trading or investing in an ico or a gambling site, the choice would be yours. But better go for trusted ones and one which makes you feel that it's the right place for you to put your money in and you will surely get a return for.

it is not a good time to buy bitcoin now. Many people already bought bitcoins for the fork. That is why altcoins are red now. I would prefer some good altcoins instead of buying bitcoin. Because after fork altcoins will start jumping to up.

I think that you should invest in Ripple coin. This is the due to of the fact that is "The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has released new open-source software for the unbanked that utilizes technology developed by distributed ledger startup Ripple" arcording to Coindesk. This app called Mojaloop. I believe that devs are going on to the right way and Ripple price will x5 soon.  Grin

For god sake, eth is not good option for investment at all. Eth is showing very useless market trends since last couple of months. If you really want some good use of your money and want return as soon as possible, then go for waves or monero is also not bad choice.

Waves are continuously increasing in value following the trends of the bitcoin like a true followers. I am pretty sure that you won’t regret investing in waves.

Do you remember time when in start of 2017 ethereum rised up from 11 to 300?
So we can see again growing up for example from 300 to 1000$. Ethereum is best altcoin ever!

Though ask, I would hold BTC and ETH for most of it. Altcoins under Top 20 have very high risks.
$5k is good money for long term investment. You can hold your coins in 2-3 years and make a house money.

A good strategy would be to try to distribute this 5k into various crypto wallets (it's called diversification). Basically you are reducing the chances of getting bust, the more diversified you are, and that kinda makes sense. Imagine have 5k only invested in BTC, next day BTC is down 20% which means you now have about 4k (loss of 1k in one day). If you have had this invested now is several other tokens, let's say 50% to BTC and 50% to ETH, and ETH goes up by 10%, then you'd still be sitting at 5k, because the loss of BTC got zeroed out by the gain of ETH. The must have currencies in my opinion to diversify your portfolio are the following:

ETH
XRP
LTC
DASH
NEO
MIOTA
OMG
QTUM

I would only invest that money on serious projects like Ethereum, that has been making a great increase in the last few days, or monero, that recently had a dump and probably will go up again after the fork.
But there are some altcoins that are never going to recover, like waves, a lot of people are hyping it, but it is obviously a dead coin, i dont see any future for this one because it doesnt offer anything new to the market, and it is only being hyped by the community, but they are failing.

I prefer you can invest NEO & Etherum.NEO is future growth coin after one years or two years neo hit 100$+.On other hand Ethereum is high effective coin price is pumping. In December will be hit worth 400$.
You have a good choice investing in ethereum, neo and I would add waves. These are my best investment because it has a lot of potential and it will grow huge. So investing in these surely will gives a profitable that will hit in the market.

invest 40% in bitcoin and the rest in altcoins NEO, Waves,ETH
I would suggest to go with at least with 70% to 80% of the amount as it will give a lot of profits within two weeks. The price of bitcoin is predicted to rise up before new month and it is actually happening. It is good to at least invest in it for that long but if someone wants to become rich by crypto coins, he must spend money on bitcoin and simply hold in all type of weather.

Depends on your prefered risk:

Low caps often offer high reward but are very risky investments. Low caps I like: SUMO, Senedron for example.

High caps will not gain as much profit as an successful low cap, but the risk is much lower. High caps I like: BTC, XMR, IOTA

If that's my $5,000 USD I would put 40% of that in NEO, 30% in ETH and 30% in OMG. I'm not going for all-in in just one token or coin that way if the price of one goes down I still have other two investment to compensate for the loss of the one investment. I would also consider investing in NEM, XRP and ADA or Cardano.

In my opinion if I have $5000 dollars on hand I buy bitcoin as investment, because their price now in the market was rapidly raising up I know that this year bitcoin value were reach to $6000-$7000 dollars. Moreover if you want to choose altcoins as investment I suggest ethereum, waves and bitcoin cash for me those coins are capacity to survive in the future, I know that their price in the market have a possibility to increase more.

If you wanted to invest in the success of cryptocurrencies, you bought Bitcoin. Period. Other cryptocurrencies – called “Altcoins” – have just been penny stocks on shady online-markets, mostly used to keep miner’s GPUs working, pump the price and dump the coins.

I would like to suggest Litecoin too. I bought Litecoin myself. I dont want to chase coins that can give me 10x anymore because I lost money trying to chase them. I would rather go for slow, steady rise. I will buy more LTC if it falls to $55 once again.

I'm planning on holding the large percentage of this investment for the long-term. Would that change anyone's recommendations?

Also looking to take a small percent (10% or so?) and get some experience in short term trading. Any recommendations for this strategy?

Really appreciate the insight.

You have to figure out which alts you like by doing your research, it is a mistake to say "Bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency and all the others are just trying to copy it."  If you look at the top 100 alts, a lot of them are all trying to do different things and get their value from solving real world problems.  Blockchain is a revolutionary technology and if you do your research you can make more money than you could imagine. Well the thing with Litecoin is, you will not see any profit unless you do a really long hold on it. And what I mean by long is it will take years until you see some serious profits. Litecoin is a coin that is pretty stable at its price right now so you will only see tidbits of profit from it.

Dont pay attention to the other ones who replied before, they are advising you to invest in those altcoins that nobody knows, the only good ones from that list is Neo and Gas, but you need to hold more than $200k worth of neo to make a good revenue from Gas. If you want to make good profit, then you should only invest that money on bitcoin, everybody knows that this has been the only coin rising in the last months while altcoins were only going down.

I appreciate everyone's opinion and advice.  As a newbie myself though, this seemed like the most sensible and smart advise.  Thank you sir!

Look at XBY as well. When investing in my opinion we should diversify and definitely include the established ones. However disruptive technology should be in as well. We don´t know if they will deliver, but if they do It really gets huge. In this chapter of small coins with disruptive tech and small price i´m really excited about XTRABYTES, XBY.

i think altcoins is the best to invest today because their prices are dropping therefore you can buy bulk cheaply, also bitcoin is a good choice if you want a stable and a long term investment but i wont suggest that you buy now because it is still high rather wait for some time or after the fork has been done for a posible dip in the price. investing in some promising ico's is a good alternative too , just make sure you know to choose and spot a legit one.

Make sure to pick up some ETH, XMR and BTC

Those coins are a guaranteed gain and arn't going anywhere for years.
Same suggestion since these 3 coins would potentially give you future profits for sure but you would still need to wait for how many years and if you cant afford to wait then you can try some altcoins in the market too which i do suggest always choose up on those top coins in the marketcap because this is the thing what im doing. Usually just aim for those coins which do have a low total supply.

Would you guys recommend Ripple as investment, Even after research its tough to decide.
I think Ripple will make money to many people. I personally don´t touch it unless it´s for very short term daytrading. Why? Centralized coin, Made for banks, and useless. You dont need the token to use the service. So it´s just for speculative trading, no use.

Diversify. 5K are more than enough to get a fairly diverse portfolio. I would combine BTC ( bigger share) with good, well established alts of your personal choice, a little of smaller coins and a dividend sharing asset if your choices are bad and you get someone to trade for you:)
50% BTC; 30% XMR and LTC; 10% KMD and XBY; 10 % TAAS. Rough estimates and the choice of coins may vary as e have plenty of choices.

I won't touch Ripple ever, idc what happens. It's also a centralised coin. Some have faith in it but I think that banks rather develop their own blockchain and don't really care about Ripple. It's a nice idea but unless it gets used its just as useless as bunnycoin. Maybe they will have some succes with smaller and private banks though.

50% I would invest in ETH and NEO for long-term, other 30% in some mid-term coins, depends in which sphere: adx for ads, tenx for bank cards, komodo for privacy, etc. And other 20% for short-term coins depends on current situation on the market

$5k is a really good capital to make an investment so its better to diversify your investments in different coins like bitcoin, ethereum, waves, digibyte, bitcoin gold and bitcoin cash as even if any one of them pumps in future you will be getting best profits as you cannot take risk of putting all your money at single place as if its price crashes in future then it will be very hard for you to recover your losses.

Check XVG and SIAcoin - both are rather undervalued right now and there no more space to step back for them  Cheesy

Let's say I had $5k I'm willing to invest in crypto.
Where would you put this money if you were to invest today?

Eth, Neo, Waves?...or just throw everything at BTC?
