ETH, LTC, Neo, ADA, Ark think that these coins should be enough for you. Even with a bad scenario, a couple of coins simply have to shoot and pay off all the expenses.

In my opinion, it is better to make your own research and trust your guts.

The most of the privacy coins are undervalued right now.

The best opportunity is to find a privacy-related project with a low total supply (less than 100M), that way the price will be increasing much faster.

I recently found one project called Ethereum Meta, it is related to anonymity and untraceable transaction. They have a very interesting project to build the Anonymous E-Market Place.

They are on ICO stage right now and already on the exchanges, you can check their website: https://ethermeta.com/
Or even better go through their Bitcointalk thread: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/future-of-privacy-ethereum-meta-foundation-of-anonymous-e-marketplace-2659058

I would call this year the year of the altcoins. It is not necessary to keep tokens from the top 100 in the portfolio. I prefer coins and tokens which has a small capitalization.

As you want to stick in the top 20 mcap coins. Then I'd suggest XRP, LTC, ADA, NEO and XLM. 1000 in each.

Anything Waves can do is being done better by a more popular & accomplished competitor; it was probably the most shilled coin on the Turkish boards throughout 2017, and its proponents are still crying about it to this day... If you still want to invest in Waves, be extremely careful.

What currencies would you buy with, and why? Looking to make a great portfolio, and somewhere to start. LTC got my attention, but the recent news kind of scares me owning so much of it. I'd like to stay towards the more well known Crypto's and no shit coins. I'd like to stay in the top 15-20

Ethereum Meta is a classic example of a shitcoin.
As the OP wants to buy coins in top 15, than why not buy an equal portion of them all and hold them for a long time. But I don't think you should buy anything right now, the market is too volatile.

Portfolio looks good but you should spread your money to toher alts also. There are good ICOs which you can sell some of your coins and invest to promising projects. Keep holding and never sell panicly no matter how markets perform on downtrends.

1. ETH
2. LTC
3. Waves
4. ADA
5. Ark
Each at 1000K.
Comeback again here by the end of the year  Wink

ADA price can make a good rise. So I think 3 dollars as the target price. But I do not know when this will happen. Waves still can not give the expected energy.

BTC, ETH, LTC, XRP are some good long-term investments that will be mooning by the end of this year. You could also check out some low cap altcoins for some quick profit but do your own research for that.

Not because I'm selfish, wouldn't want to be responsible if you lose your money.

Kind of like the caveat at the end or like it's often said, "this is not a business advice, DYOR". That being said, ETH, LTC, ADA, DASH, BTC, WAVES are for solid coins to have in one's portfolio. Their worth by the end of the year will be phenomenal.

Most people will just advise you to buy what they are already hodling. This is really a big issue in the crypto investment space - trust. Do your own research of each potential coinand make your own decisions. I think we will see more index type investments become available in the crypto market this year which should allow you to spread the risk across a range of coins.

I don't think it is a trust issue...true that people recommend what they hold because they believe in it to begin with (otherwise why purchase/invest on it?).

Truth is, we all see different things on each coin/token.  Many will get it right but most will be mistaken.  Well meaning folks are eager to help and guide...not knowing/realizing they themselves are also lost. Cheesy

In the end, DYOR is the best answer so you will not have anyone else to blame but yourself it it fails.

Agree absolutely - DYOR is the best advice.

Well that's nice really big money for investments. I suggest you do a lot of search on those altcoins with solid fundamentals or background. Then finds an altcoins and spend a little maybe 10%-20% of your portfolio altcoins with a low market cap and low circulating supply. Goodluck.

BTC,ETH,NEO.

NEM is also undervalued at the moment, but has surged back a bit in the last couple of days.

XRP is probably a good one long term, but it's weird as the price doesn't go up in response to good news - and there has been quite a lot of good news recently.

If you want to venture a bit outside the top 20, WaltonChain looks promising.

Yes neo is good but you can add in your coins is ethereum. Market is in down these days and the best entry to purchase at this rate. Venchain is also good they are updated on their project. So we invest that could offer a nice profit at the end.

Do not invest ин too many coins at once because later will be harder control all. The best option will be invest in 2-3 coins. I recommend you choose eth, litecoin and waves
This will suits only for conservative people. Investments In ETH,LTC & WAVES will maximum give him x1.5-x2 profit.
5k$ is too small sum for investing in TOP10 alts, better to buy 10-15 young and perspective coins which can give profit x10+.

I would diversify it as follows:
1k - BTC,
1k - ETH,
these two would be the stability fund of this portfolio;
1k - fundamental platform projects, would divide it into several coins: NEO, Stellar, Cardano, EOS, ICON (my personal favorites here are ICX and NEO);
1k - anonymous currencies: Monero, Dash, ZCash;
1k - a bit risky investments which promise big profits in my opinion, though you seriously cut such possibilities limiting portfolio with top 15-20: TRON, Qtum, IOTA and my favorite in this category NANO.

Why not, these threads are fun. Here is my take:

1) Conservative approach: Someone that wants to make big gains but long term, minimizing risk

$4k - Bitcoin
$800 - Monero
$200 - Any other altcoin with potential to pump due hype

2) Reckless approach: Trying to ride the hype wave on some altcoin which is being sold as something big, being this true or not

$1k - Bitcoin
$1k - IOTA
$1k - Hashgraph
$1k - EOS
$1k - Monero (switch to anything more risky if you want)

That's my take. Always have at least $1k on Bitcoin in case you fuck up big time.

if you want to take good stable coins from top -20. You can pay attention on ZEC, DASH, (XEm, ADA, TRX, Stellar- very cheap now) also ETC and XRP.  All this coins are good and can make a good profit in 2018.  Also hold some part of your deposit in btc and Cash for buy cheap positions.

ETH cause it will pump in near future like 2x Times and even could try to chase bitcoin, BTC that is an easy answer, WAVES  cause price of even 100$ is possible, and some of your amount invest in some risky coins/ thrash.

Ethereum is next best coin to bitcoin but recently days competition given by NEO and ADA team smart contract fight. I see ethereum seems low in the market. Please choose the ethereum when you want to invest for long term focus.
If you want to make the money instantly go with Ripple or other cheap coins which are lower than 10 USD or top 10 cheap coins.
This will give the better income with the portfolio you designed.

What are your desired/expected returns from $5k? How long do you plan to hold?

Often you see people expecting 10x from the top coins, if you're fine with 2-3x I would say this is more realistic for top coins.

I don't really care for 10x from top coins, even if I got 2-5x return over the next year or so I'd be fine with that.

I feel like even by then, the crypto currency will have moved on to possibly the next generation of coin and we'll see more strong consistent ones rise.

I'd like to hold my coins until the end of the year.

Plus the only other issue that I'm running into, is that I can't find a safe and reliable site to use.

Very realistic approach and you are right on your views around things changing, if you view the top 10 from last year MaidSafeCoin was one, it's now ranked #96, Augur was another which is now ranked #41

Augur = started 2017 at 0.0039 Sat value, it's now 0.0041, not much of an increase there vs holding just BTC, about 5% more than just holding BTC
MaidSafe = not so good, lost a lot of Sat value over 2017, went from 0.0001 to 0.000035 in sat value, loss of 65% BTC value

To get an idea here is CMC from Jan 03 2017, https://web.archive.org/web/20170103043616/https://coinmarketcap.com/#USD

This logic of "you'll be safe on the top 10" is bs in my eyes.

The altcoins in the top 10 which I think can gain BTC value this year are:
NEO, ADA, EOS, Monero and Eth, the others might but this is where my confidence would be out of the top 10, I don't hold half the ones mentioned though.

Currently, I would have more faith investing in certain coins out of the top 10 for BTC growth like Nano, Komodo, OmiseGo, Neblio and a few others, once again this is just my view.

I could recommend other coins I have faith in with lower caps but this goes against your approach, Neblio is low but it's my #1 coin for the year, still recommend doing your research.

The key is to increase BTC value, a lot of coins will go up in dollar value due to BTC climbing, but unless BTC value goes up you're better just holding BTC, and this is going to be the safest option hands down.

Bitcoin, Cardano, Ripple, Ethereum and NEO these are the best portfolio in my choice. I think all five coins are long term promising coins. But many spam news are spread the crypto market so you are scared in  the crypto investment. So if you want but cryptocurrency you analyse the future possibilities of that coin then invest soon and don't consider the fake news.

Hello Bro, I'm going to give you a great advice, use it and you will become a millionaire!
My advice is to use your brain! Don't ever publish a thread like this, do your own research, take the risk, use your head and trust me, you will lose some time but you will earn a lot!

Sorry but I disagree.

True that he can research all 1,531 (and rising) coins and tokens but it is much more efficient if he can narrow it down to the suggested coins.  Who has time to research all the coins anyway?
You can listen to someone else's opinion to select from a huge number of projects several have already proved their viability in the market.

i agree with fauchetKING
i think asking like this just bullshit. you must do your own research.
then believe with your own decision. it will make us smart to choose a coin

Besides that, he wants to stay in top 15-20 so no need to invest 1531+ coins. Analysing 20 established coins, that have a good history available, shouldn't be that much trouble for a $5000 investment...

You can listen to someone else's opinion to select from a huge number of projects several have already proved their viability in the market.

i agree with fauchetKING
i think asking like this just bullshit. you must do your own research.
then believe with your own decision. it will make us smart to choose a coin

Hello Bro, I'm going to give you a great advice, use it and you will become a millionaire!
My advice is to use your brain! Don't ever publish a thread like this, do your own research, take the risk, use your head and trust me, you will lose some time but you will earn a lot!

A good amount to invest $ 5,000. You can create many different porphyristos. I think you should split it into 3. Invest long term with one part, short term with one part, medium part investment with one part. There are people who do a lot of analysis, research them. Then do your own research and make your decision.

If you're looking for high returns in 2018, buy TRX. TRX will be the better ethereum. TRX is on sale right now. OCN is the next suggestion I have. Incredibly undervalued right now because OCN will be integrated into Obike this month. It's also rumored to be listed on Bittrex and/or Binance soon. OCN will be integrated into Grab next. More partnerships are to come after.

ETH, NEO, etc. are safe investments for gradual growth. For huge returns because of massive adoption, go with OCN and TRX!

Just my opinion.

1) ADA
2) ETH
3) Doggy
4) NEO
5) Universa ( there is a chance to become top 100 crypto)
6) Stellar

Also you can keep money and invest in those currency, which is going to fork and then receive something new for free.

What currencies would you buy with, and why? Looking to make a great portfolio, and somewhere to start. LTC got my attention, but the recent news kind of scares me owning so much of it. I'd like to stay towards the more well known Crypto's and no shit coins. I'd like to stay in the top 15-20

Well you have your option now, so I think you're on a safe place by owning those top coins. If you changed your mind and decided to look for something that can work for you try Utrust and also Insurepal this are two great new coins that succeed on their ICO easily better to have some of this.

BTC, ETH, LTC, XRP are some good long-term investments that will be mooning by the end of this year. You could also check out some low cap altcoins for some quick profit but do your own research for that.

Not because I'm selfish, wouldn't want to be responsible if you lose your money.

I would definitely have invested in a STRAT and TKY. Now the prices are very low and you can get profitable. Stratis has its own blockchain - it is a sleeping giant. TKY is a giant in the Chinese market, it has a great future
