This grandma is a genius. But in China, 61-year-old people is not so old as in Eastern Europe. Asian people have more time on our planet Smiley

Why she had a prison sentence of 4 months and not a prison sentence converted into a fine? Are the laws of china so severe? In the article they do not say if she will appeal from the penalty or not

Stealing from the government has been always severely punished under communist regimes. Read about the "Law of Spikelets" from the link below

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_Spikelets

People were getting from 5 to 10 years of Gulag prison for just taking "as little as a handful of grain or spikelets left behind in the fields after the entire harvest was officially collected and counted". Just think of it: those spikelets would rot on the field if weren't picked up by the "thieves", and yet such a harsh punishment was given to them!

I think she's lucky getting just 4 months. Also, I agree with posters above saying that she acted as a cover for someone else, like her son or her grandson. And taking the obvious lie into account,
I am personally impressed with the softness of the sentence.

it is said in the article that the grandma admitted that she already sold some of the profit she made through mining bitcoin.
as much as I love seeing old people adapting to new technologies I think the family just made her an escape goat since
if the suspect is younger the sentence could be a lot more severe.

"Her family members were reportedly regretful for her actions and offered to refund the 6500 yuan income, which is now paid"

You have a logical theory on this situation. But we will not know the real story behind this news.
On a different note, reading the title alone seems pretty cool even if the grandma did wrong on this part.  Grin
She didn't have formal education per se but she learned how to mine btc, this is the power of internet nowadays.
You can learn a lot of stuffs via net. More than likely she's a member of a chinese crypto forum.
She can extract mining information from different net sources, so it is more than plausible that she learned how to mine from them.

having watch or read a lot of Chinese news out of curiosity Chinese people(not all of them of course) have the tendency to blame
the young or old to escape punishment. your theory about that "she learned how to mine" is more far fetched than her family letting her
take the fall so the douche bag on her family escapes the punishment.

Damn! this is very bad, fine she broke some rules and should be punished but they should also look at her age and reconsider giving her some other lenient punishments. I think it's too aggressive to punish an old woman in such a harsh way.

In fact, the justice sense the Chinese have(When not related to politics) is one reason why i feel a bit of admiration for them. They want to make examples out of the people who commit crimes and that is pretty effective in making others not follow the same path.

For example, in Venezuela if they something starts hunting the ones that steal electricity(Even when it is almost free and for that reason it works so bad), a lot of people would be arrested.

It's great to support the cause but please in legal ways.

That is really funny. How does one steal electricity though? Like doesn't pay for it or lives in a shared unit?

PayAccept - Worldwide payments accepted in seconds
And it happened in China, where electricity is cheaper than the rest of the world
Here in Brazil we have a lot of people who steals electricity and this affects the price of energy we pay, it's a shame
For a country with low electricity prices, why are there still people stealing it? In my country, the electricity price is quite high, so there are very few builders trying to exploit Bitcoin mining because you can lose money because of high electricity prices.

Sadly this is good news for me. Somebody has been caught stealing something from the source of power in their country. It's good that she's had been caught by doing that. There's no room in cheaters in this world and she cheated both cryptocurrency and the Chinese government.
Consider that you have a old person in your home and you talk to them about bitcoin mining, do you really think that they will understand anything about it, the situation i see here is that, her grand son or grand daughter might have done these things and in order to save them from going to jail she helped them out and took the punishment instead, it is a different culture altogether in Asia and they will protect your kid even if they do something illegal.

A Thursday report from China disclosed that the Kaiping District People’s Court of Tangshan City, Hebei Province has sentenced a 61-year-old woman to prison for stealing national power resources for the mining of bitcoin.

Just imagine seeing your grandma during holidays and asking, "what's keeping you busy?", and the responded will be, "mining bitcoin" Grin. That will be priceless.  Grin. So for 10 months, this old lady has been 'stealing electricity', but it look closely at the article, it looks like the profit is around $940 only. But she has to pay $1450 + jail time.

I never encounter any such things like that were the old lady having a mining rig and earning bitcoin at her old age which is 61 yrs. old,
Aside from that I think all countries have like that a problem for illegal taping of electricity, here in my country in some other places here in civilized place there are lot of illegal taping here who doing it actually.

She admitted doing this, but I wonder if she did this on purpose, being fully conscious about her actions.

Well... if you check the previous posts, then you'll get an idea about it. Most of us have speculated that she might have acted as a cover for someone else. She is probably trying to protect her son or grandson. I don't expect a 61-year old Chinese grandma with only basic computer knowledge to be proficient in setting up a mining farm, and then mining cryptocurrency.
Law is law.. To be honest even me cannot setup the mining rig by my on. She must be ask for someone else help and did earn money by stealing the electricity to mine cryptos. That was an easy money..but a bad decision also as the law is very strict.
Which is right, if there's regulations about that it will be implemented even she's already and old lady, she will still be punished as the law from such country is really strict implementing there ruling about this case, she will serve her sentence as the decisions of the law.

Grandmother brilliant. It is rare that people at this age are interested in bitcoin. Why give her a prison sentence, it doesn't seem right to me.

ohh/ I've read it on taklimakan. For one hand it looks funny how ur grandma is trying to do mining but in another hand it's so sad bc such a lady needs to think where to get some additional profit
Yeah, I completely agree with u. It's such a pity that chinese government can't give a proper payement for its citizens. But her acting encourages me
yeah, I'm also surprised she learned by herself how to mine whereas many of young generation cannot learn the basis. but there are so many platforms like binance
I highly doubt she was the one mining the bitcoin as it takes some technical knowledge to be able to setup these miners and configure them. Do you think she was able to even lift up these miners up or down the stairs when they weight as much as a 12 kilos? Old granny would probably have a heart attack doing such work. She had to have one of her grandkids who was doing this living with her and she was the one caught because the residence where they found the equipment was in her name. And being granny she didnt want her grandkid going to jail so she took the blame.
What grandparents would do so to not have their grandkids lives ruined with breaking the law. Embarrassed

Of course, an elderly person is a pity, I think there are pitfalls in this story, maybe a grandson or a son did this and the grandmother took the blame. And it is not clear how she stole electricity from the state, the article does not describe.
that actually does make sense, I mean it could be that grandma took the blame for someone else just as you said since it's just by nature for the parents to protect their child if we are talking maybe it's that grandma's relative or simply her family.
However as the family has reimbursed the funds I guess it will be fine, but im pretty sure the police will still be looking after that grandma lol.
Yes. I was thinking the same thing when I first heard about this story a couple of days ago.

With the punishment he got and considering the worth of the electricity she stole I think that the Chinese government gave her a lighter sentence than what it should be, if this was a normal adult she might be facing a harsher sentence which might be 1 year at least.  But I think the moral of the news here and finally someone confirms it in their article is....

Although it is legal to own bitcoin as well as send and receive the cryptocurrency in China, it is illegal to steal national power resources to operate bitcoin miners.

This is the truth and all of you saying Bitcoin is illegal in China have been mislead with wrong information. Cryptocurrency has been active in China before a lot of countries have started doing so.
