A Thursday report from China disclosed that the Kaiping District People’s Court of Tangshan City, Hebei Province has sentenced a 61-year-old woman to prison for stealing national power resources for the mining of bitcoin.

Just imagine seeing your grandma during holidays and asking, "what's keeping you busy?", and the responded will be, "mining bitcoin" Grin. That will be priceless.  Grin. So for 10 months, this old lady has been 'stealing electricity', but it look closely at the article, it looks like the profit is around $940 only. But she has to pay $1450 + jail time.
What surprises me the most is not how she was able to steal the power, is how was she able to come up with idea the planing for it knowing whether it is profitable or not, and most importantly is how she was able to set up miners and assemble the mining machine, i mean poeple around 30 and 20 don't even know what bitcoin is and struggle with anything related to computers, let even mining, which makes me think that she is not alone in this plan.

And it happened in China, where electricity is cheaper than the rest of the world
Here in Brazil we have a lot of people who steals electricity and this affects the price of energy we pay, it's a shame
Stealing electricity is not a new thing as you can see those kind of activities in many third world countries, but are the people in Brazil stealing electricity for mining, if that is the case i will be surprised  Shocked.
I am not convinced that an old grandma understands how bitcoin mining works and she stole the electricity to mine bitcoin which is really weired, may be someone did that and she was caught instead. I am not a person who believes every media story and that is the reason i am skeptical about this news.

The risk vs reward wasn't worth it for her if she really wanted to break the low.  She got a decent amount of jail time and she only earned a few scraps of bitcoin.  I do agree with other posters that it is amazing that an old lady was actually going around mining bitcoin when most people still don't even know what it is.

Is it legit news from a reliable source? If so, then that grandma has been living a thug life for years.
I'm just really surprised that an older woman got great skills in mining but the sad thing is she has to pay for it.
That's the risk of banning mining that some miners have to pay. That grandma is just so cool.

it is said in the article that the grandma admitted that she already sold some of the profit she made through mining bitcoin.
as much as I love seeing old people adapting to new technologies I think the family just made her an escape goat since
if the suspect is younger the sentence could be a lot more severe.

"Her family members were reportedly regretful for her actions and offered to refund the 6500 yuan income, which is now paid"

You have a logical theory on this situation. But we will not know the real story behind this news.
On a different note, reading the title alone seems pretty cool even if the grandma did wrong on this part.  Grin
She didn't have formal education per se but she learned how to mine btc, this is the power of internet nowadays.
You can learn a lot of stuffs via net. More than likely she's a member of a chinese crypto forum.
She can extract mining information from different net sources, so it is more than plausible that she learned how to mine from them.

I feel sad for her but that was totally cool, a grandma that have put passion on mining bitcoin and even steal the power? Who could have such courage at this moment. Well I mined last year with ether and I kinda feel guilty also because at use the governments supposed power to mine also, that time when I was living with my dad on his barracks because he was top official and I did really have a slight of fear of being caught but no one had, lucky me.

Wow, I couldn't imagine that a 61-year-old grandma would be so smart to manage a mining business. She was just unlucky because she's living in a country which prohibits mining. China has really a great number of miners. That grandma is earning enough at her age.

I get surprised of a 61 year grandma knowing about mining and running a rig. It is truly unbelievable, because in my country even the younger generation doesn't have any idea about bitcoin. This describes the growth of bitcoin within China as a trading asset as well in mining. These might also be the reason for China government to come up with plans to stop mining process within the country.
