Just so you know the GX 650 is a very low quality PSU, coolermaster is a mix of good and crap, it's not a coincidence that it's way cheaper than other 650W PSUs. 5830s are the next most intensive consumer of electricity after the 5870, and I'm not saying they won't run on that PSU, but I wouldn't use it myself. It might not explode immediately, it might not explode ever, but there's a reason why people spend more on what is arguably the most important single part in a computer (especially one running hot 24/7).

The raw answer to your question though is yes, 650Watts will run 3 GPUs assuming a small enough system and little to no overclock on 5830s or below.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I bought the GX 650w specifically because I thought it was the best priced PSU for the quality. I know it's not the best, but it seemed like a suitable medium between the poor generic PSUs and high end Corsair style PSUs. I just wanted something reliable. I'm not planning on overloading it so I think it'll be fine. As for the 5830, that's true. I'd probably prefer a 5770, but it depends which card offers the best price/performance, which is pretty much what i've aimed for in my entire rig.

I was wondering something similar.  I just got my PCIe Extenders in from Cablesaurus, and am planning on doing 5850, 5850, 5830 in one box (eventually even a 5770 too)

Right now that box has a Corsair 650w (single-rail) so I was going to swap it out for my gaming PC's Corsair 850w (single-rail) before I went with 3 cards, but after reading your post I might just leave it the way it is for the three cards.  When I add the 5770 I'll switch up to the 850w of course, but I really am not looking forward to pulling my main gaming PC apart to commandeer the 850w and want to put it off for as long as possible Wink

I also have a 650W but was thinking of adding a 5850 or 5870 to the 6950 glad it seems possible so I can sell my 5770 and unlock my 6950 to a 6970,hehe.

Err, yeah adding a third is what I meant.  Sorry, I get mixed up a lot.

Thanks for the info.
And sorry, I'm only running 2 cards at the moment and wanting to upgrade to 3 (not 4).

I have one 5830 and one 5770 Smiley   (both overclocked)

Looking to buy another 5830.

Just to clear things up!

Probably.  I was running two OC'd 5870s and a 5850 on a 750w PSU without any problems.  The cards you listed draw significantly less power, so adding a 4th card shouldn't be a problem, unless it's a 6990 Tongue

Hi there.
I have this PSU (GX 650w by coolermaster specifically) running a 5830 and 5770 at the moment. Pulls about 300watts with that setup and I'm looking to add another card to the remaining x1 slot.

Would this PSU be able to handle another 5830? Given the 52 wattage on one 12v rail. And when I say handle I mean stable without risk of my house burning down...

Cheers.
