I know this is a two week old thread, but wanted to let the OP know that the issue may be the motherboard. There are a number of people that have problems getting it to support more than 3 cards.

Now, I just went with a Linuxcoin USB instead of troubleshooting my Ubuntu installation, lazy maybe.

I'm having a similar problem but on Windows.  I have a 6950 and a 5850.  I have a 1000W PSU.  Even with a dummy plug (tried several), the OS and Catalyst control center only see the card in the 0 slot.

 Huh

It's a new 1200 watt PSU dedicated to mining, Antec 1200 HCP.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371043

maybe this?
Code:
aticonfig --initial --adapter=all -f

Just checking, your PSU is powerful enough? single-rail 12v or multi-rail 12v?

Using Ubuntu 11.04 from a hard drive.
I have a MSI 890FXA-GD70 motherboard with 3 6970s running fine.
Then, I plug in a 4th card (a 5830 xtreme) and system hangs on boot.
They are all plugged into 16x pcie slots via extenders.

Is there some trick to getting these different series cards working nice together?
